Beating the Bus

I don't think it is something only Guardiola recognizes. I think pretty much any manager would love those players. They tend to be really expensive. Guardiola's two quick dribbly wingers cost 100 million. Not many managers including Klopp have access to that sort of money. So I think the statement "Klopp can learn from Guardiola" is a bit unfair.

Yeah agreed.

So to summarize - for the first goal it is of equal importance a) that we score it. b) that our opponents don't score it. Did I get that right?🙂

Haha - yes.

I guess what I mean is, and in a way similar to Pedro's point - both are ways to encourage other teams to become more expansive unless they're playing for 0-0.

The question for me is - do we need better defensive players or a change in tactics that give up sone attacking verve for defensive solidity.

The answer is a bit of both - but focusing on our attack shouldn't be the primary focus.

I see the inherent danger in this - but what about conceding more possession? Easing the gegenpress for portions of the game to throw their gameplan?
For me, the 80/20 possession split in itself allows opposing teams to follow their own blueprint of how to play us. If we were to relinquish that possession to lure them out into a more unfamiliar, expansive game, then surely this would create more space for us to run into - especially during the latter stages of the game as our fitness became a deciding factor.

Isn't this what we did against Man City?

As I suggested elsewhere - opening up defences isn't our problem - we've done it all season.
.

Yes, but we can't any more mate. We've really struggled with this of late. This is the major part of the problem. We can't break down the buses since 2017 started.

Which buses haven't we broken down?

The Serbia version of KHL will then pronounce him the best "ball playing centre back" ever to have graced a pitch and constantly remind us of this goal even though he will never, ever do it again.

Maybe so, but I don't think Lovren is on Agger's level at all. Whether he scores that blinder or not.

Actually I have been consistently disappointed with him, I thought he was a defender that was calm, good on the ball and one that could build our game from the back, much like Agger - but we've only seen that in glimpses haven't we?

I hope we are in the market for a new ball-playing CB and if Matip doesn't soon find his feet again, make that two as we'd then also need a new commanding one.

I hope we're in the market for a CB that's good at defending.

I guess we'll be shopping in Southampton again...

Just like we want midfielders that are good at midfielding and attackers that are good at attacking, right?

We kind of have those.... it's the defenders & Keepers that need a good looking at.

I think we have some attackers that are good in some parts of the attack, but we don't really really have anyone who's really good at very vital different parts of the attacking game why we probably also should look at new players that are very good in attack in specific areas thereof where we seem to come out short, attacking-wise.

Same goes for midfielders as well.

It felt like we could score from anywhere a few weeks ago. What changed?

Injuries, loss of form, AFCON, constantly changing lineups, match fitness of returning players, collective loss of nerve... lots of little things that added up.

I'd should have probably added the fundamental underlying problem - we concede too many goals because our defence & keeper are a combination of not organised enough & not good enough.

Excellent PDE
Make the pitch as big as possible in possesion
Great Combination play both out wide and centrally
Pacey wide players good in 1v1 situations
Quick passing with limited touches and always looking to play forward where possible.
Full backs capable of overlapping and underlapping and knowing when to do each.
9 & 10 having the ability to receive the ball facing forward in tight areas.

As a side note being very good at pressing the ball carrier early and reacting quickly when we transition from ball possesion opponent to ball possession

We struggle because lately we have been missing a lot of these components

Out any insights to be gleaned from nature documentaries, there's a NatGeo video of road runner vs snake. The snake launches into a flurry of vicious attacks and is soon out of breath. His enemy does little beside dance to remain out of range.... spoiler alert.. . That said; if we haven't figured out how to break down buses, then its about time to change the strategy and park our own bus against such opponents.
