If you were Rafa and faced with the players you have now and the need to sell before you buy - who would it be? Who'd you like to see leave this January and who'd you like to see come in. Let's say you could have £10m + any money regained from sales (wishful thinking I know but it is a hypothetical thread)

The 10 Mill will be used to lower the yanks debts and the 4 players sold will be used to pay wages.

The yanks will give rafa a list of players on a free and told he can have whoever he likes off the list if there wage demands are not excessive...

Puts on Glockhat...............

We should get Villa and Silva on loan and put in a sneaky bid for Aguero of £10m + Dossena but Rafael is too bad of a manager to think of something as brilliant as this and I wont be advising him any more over dinner now that I have said what I think of him after Montse told Rafael she doesn't like my stinkey breath looking down her cleavage..........

I'd swap Dossena for Messi myself.

And then buy Aguero with the money they give as part of the deal.

Now you are just being plain silly. (hopes this isn't a banable offence 😉)

I'd sell Ryan Babel, Dossena, Voronin and buy someone who can play equally well on the wing and upfront, like Higuain and that's it.

Realistically I think we'll shift Dossena for £2.5M-3M. And Voronin for £2M or so.

Giving around £14M-£15 to spend.

I'd offer a loan deal for Pavlyuchenko at Spurs to provide some cover.
Offer £15M for Darren Bent as a cheeky punt.
I'd talk to the Hamburg about Elia and possibly line up a summer move.
Enquire about VDV or Higuan - and if they were available, blow the budget on one of them.

I really don't think Higuain is available (and if he is, I wouldn't want him out wide at all), but yeah, he'd blowing everything on.

Pandev would be a decent option as a versatile forward - he's available on a free in the summer.

VDV on loan or for a cut price would be the first enquiry of the window for me.

Elia would be great as well.

Id look to loan some players giving squad cover and leaving whatever budget we have to hit up one good player, VdV being the main one. Definately look to sell Dossena , Babel and Voronin, if we could get £10 million+ for the three then go for one mega talent with all money combined, I realise this is easier said than done.

Goodbyes to Dossena (£3M), Degen (£2M), Skrtel (£6M) and Voro-neen (£3M) and maybe a few not-so-youngsters-anymore.

Gained £14M

Helloes to Simon Kjaer (£14M), Higuain (£10M) & Pavlyuchenko (loan)

Spend £24M + loan deal fee

Backline sorted.

Carra 3rd choice RB after Johnson and Kelly.

Promote Pacheco and recall Nemeth.

It's the January transfer window ... teams are not going to let Pandev, Simon Kjaer et al go without cover. Likeiwse Higuain etc will be big money Summer transfers. So forget them and stop playing FM, Pro-evo, or whatever the fuck those games are called. And Skrtel sold ? Give me a fucking break ... as if.

Pavuleychenko on loan is about the best we can hope for.

As the teams you are referring to are the 'mighty' Palermo and Lazio, I really don't think you can say that they'd definitely won't cash in come January. How can you be so sure?

With regards to Higuain. Well, he doesn't play whenever Benzema, Kaka, Raul and Ronaldo are fit so he could be pushing for a deal come January. That's not at all unlikely in my opinion.

Putting Skrtl in there was solely meant to raise money and as I don't think we shoud sell either of Carra or Agger he was the only viable option that would actually demand a fee. If we were to go for a sought after player like Kjaer we'd be in need to make a sacrifice.

KHL - you are playing FM.

Pandev & Kjaer will have no shortage of suitors come the Summer and same goes for Higuain. It's insane to even consider selling Skrtel (because we WON'T be getting Kjaer).

Well mate, this thread is called 'Be the manager' so I think we're somehow excused.

I know I'm 'dreaming' but come on it's not like it's completely unrealistic that we'd go for one or more of the targets I've mentioned.

*Selling Skrtl would only be IF we would strike a deal for Kjaer. Obviously.

I see where you're coming from, £3m does seem a little high.

You seem to be under the impression no decent players can be signed in January, which is bollocks - we've bought some.

While some of the ideas are a bit far fetched, suggestions like Pandev, who's soon to be out of contract in the summer, are much more likely to be sold now.

I would be very, very happy with that.

Higuain does play for Real. It's unfair to say that when so and so are fit, he can't get a game.

I don't know about Lazio not letting Pandev go. They might be tempted to grab a couple million rather than losing him for nothing.

He does but it's no secret he's been moved well down the pecking order of late.

Must have been a bad batch.

I'm not going to list off every single player but I'd have the following players as not for sale in January: Reina, Gerrard, Torres, Aquilani, Johnson, Yossi.

The following would be considered for sale (for varying reasons) if a good offer came in: Mascherano, Lucas, Agger, Kuyt.

I'd be actively shopping Dossena, Babel, Voronin.

The rest I'm either not too strongly in favour of selling or don't think they'd fetch an amount worth selling them for.

What to do depends on a couple of factors:

1. Firstly we're obviously in the shits financially at the moment. Do we need to restrict spending for the sake of the long term existence of the club ?

2. Our form between now and January.
If we continue our current run of form and look like we might struggle for CL qualification I'd be tempted to go for a fire sale. Get rid of some older, bigger earners then give the likes of Nemeth, Pacheco, Kelly, Ayala, Eccleston etc a chance to play themselves into the first team for the rest of the season. I could live with us finishing low down the table if I felt we were at least building towards something by bringing some of the younger players through. Some of them won't be good enough, that's inevitable, but if we got a few who were capable of Premiership football it could be worth it. Then if could add to them in the summer with the money from sales in January as well as having the benefits of saving a few million on the wage bill we could leave ourselves in a much better position for the long term. I don't think the current "strategy" is working, we never seem to be building towards anything and I don't see us being serious contenders unless we accept that we might need to take a step back before we can take two forward.

Can't agree with that Rosco.

Not building anything ? Xabi was a set back but otherwise our first team is on a par with almost any other in Europe. One or two positions need strengthening but otherwise it is the weakness of the squad that is costing us big time.
