BBC interview with Rafa

I respect Rafa immensely, but his defensive tendency to bristle at the stupidity of the press is one of his worst traits. He ends up enumerating all these things in a professorial tone which just lends credence to the criticism he's reacting to.

Just finished watching it. Interesting interview.
Rafa is good and pointing out the positives and defending the negatives.
He said what we all knew regarding Xabi that it wasnt about his wife giving birth, it was about Xabi being below par for two seasons and the one he could sacrifice for Barry + a couple of other players. He was also considering the English quota that was coming in to play.

Anyway I don't think we will ever see Rafa managing Liverpool again. But I bet we'll see him in the premiership in the near future. Chelsea, Man City or Tottenham.

Yep it was almost cringe worthy at times...

Interesting interview and a man whose heart was certainly in the right place as regards our club. His legacy, I hope, will be in his rejuvenation of the Academy and of course, one (indeed some) of the best nights any of us have experienced as Liverpool fans. YNWA Rafa.

The fact that he loves us and the city so much makes me think he'll never manage another english side

He specifically said that he wants to continue his career in England.

I'm not going to watch that.

It'll just make me sad thinking how close he came to being an absolute legend for us, and how much he loves this club and city.

He did wonderful things for this club.

But his time came and went when we finished 2nd.

Lovely interview and its clear he loves Liverpool the club, Liverpool the city and Liverpool the people.

He has unfinished business with us. I loved him managing us and I hope he comes back some day after Kenny wins a few titles.

I prefer it to stay that way. To me, he's just like Houllier where his role with us goes - accomplished some great things to guide us back on track after a lost period, but ultimately failed to finish the race. I don't want him back as I don't bathe in the romanticism that he'll be better or that we'll play better football the second time round.

Yeah, hard to imagine with who though. Villa would have been good for him, but he's not going to get any of the top jobs any time soon. And I can't imagine him working for owners as interfering as Blackburn's or Newcastle's, for instance.

What comes across in that interview is that he really enjoys the wheeler-dealing aspect of being a football manager.

I wonder if he'd consider dropping down a division and taking over at somewhere like Derby or Middlesbrough?

I just loved Rafa's Hodgson jibe.

- They said Hodgson inherited a bad squad, look at them now with Kenny.

I respect Rafa and what he did for the club. I love the fact that despite everything he genuinely loves the club and city.

Rafa will have to change quite a lot tactically before I would even consider taking him back. More importantly he'd have to win a good few titles to convince me.

Just to clarify I was referring to comments people made regarding the Torres situation not anything I had heard about Pepe.

I don't think Rafa has it in him to change. Every top manager needs supreme confidence in his own decisions, and Rafa at his best is unquestionably a top manager, but with him self-confidence too often shades over into stubbornness. That's what did for him, and for GH before him for that matter, when they were managing LFC.

Although he does admit to making many mistakes there. You also powerfully get a sense that his entire Liverpool career was adjusting to the new responsibilities of buying and selling and balancing the squad. Watching that interview made complete sense of a DOF position.

I love Rafa, his love for the team and city was never in doubt. He gave us many, many unbelievable memories and under him we destroyed Europe's best on a regular basis. That he never managed consistency in the league will always detract from his overall record but he put us back amongst the European elite and for that we should always be grateful.
