Barwick's top Kop job

BRIAN BARWICK is being lined up for a key role in the Anfield power structure.

The former FA chief executive is a lifelong Liverpool fan and has not taken up a permanent position in the sport since his departure from Soho Square in 2008.

After the takeover by New England Sports Ventures, managing director Christian Purslow announced he was leaving his position, although he would remain as a non-executive director.

John W Henry and his associates are putting together a new management team for the boardroom and the News of the World understands Barwick will be offered a key role.

It might even be that Barwick, who was responsible for recruiting Fabio Capello as England coach, is asked to steer the club through its current transitional stage.

An interim role as acting chief executive could be a possibility.

Barwick is a diehard Liverpool supporter, first going to Anfield almost 50 years ago.

Formerly head of BBC and ITV Sport, he has set up his own sports and media consultancy business and lectures on football business at Liverpool University.

The American owners will have a strong hands-on approach, but they are shrewd enough to know that supporters would welcome the influence of a genuine fan who also has experience of football administration at the top level.

The man who hired the 'Wolly with the Brolly'.

Yay.
At the time he was the best candidate for fans who craved an Englishman. It turned out to be horrific of course but you cant fault Barwick.
I like him and he is a Liverpool supporter. I'd far rather Barwick looking for our new manager than Chester P Longwhang the american sports guru.

He was at the Bburn game and sat together with Purslow. Could be some truth to this.

This idea has too many similarities with Parry's appointment for my liking. He too is a Liverpool fan and an experienced and highly rated administrator who did well in a more bureaucratic type of organisation, but when he moved over to the purely commercial big time with us he fell a long way short of making the most of the job. I'd take some convincing that appointing Barwick won't go the same way.

I don't think there's any reason to compare him to Parry. Barwick led the FA during the Wembley stadium build and during a time in which they negotiated huge TV deals. It's a much better CV, even if the stadium cost grillions, it''s better to have the experience than not, and he's couldn't be more on the inside track for media rights.

Henry will appoint people he thinks that can improve us as a club.

Barwick has extensive football administration. That he's a Liverpool fan means nothing. Broughton wasn't and was fantastic.

I want the best qualified people employed by the club to take us forward.

Some good points there, but I'm not entirely repentant. Parry negotiated a big TV deal during his time at the Premier League too.

The dreaded Liverpool fan vote of confidence.

I can't say I know enough about these guys or the level of experience and aptitude required to be a successful football administrator to make any informed judgements, but on the the surface of things those at the FA never struck me as being particularly forward-thinking.

Well, Parry was absolutely useless on the commercial side, but then the only one above him to make sure he did his job, the one that was supposed to ask the right questions, was Moores.
In this current situation there are several men above him asking questions about the smallest percentage of possible improvements in all areas, so if he doesn't perform then he'll be off. Not to mention the fact that there will no doubt be a team of people that will be delegated jobs in different departments (well, that's my guess but it would seem the normal approach for a multi-million pound business run by businessmen).
He's got experience and he'll want the best for the club. I'm not against this appointment at all.

Good post, and BTW I was raising questions rather than saying flat out that I didn't want Barwick. I'd prefer not to appoint someone who will need those above him to crack the whip in the way you describe, but that post's the best case for appointing Barwick that I've seen yet.

Karen Brady as CEO? Jesus Fucking Christ, what type of grindingly terrifying place am I in when I can't even work out of you are fucking joking or not?

I would like Karen Brady to get the role
of ceo and barwick as chairman.

yup good suggestion

She's got to the top by sucking off Sullivan, who's one lecherous, sleazy fucker himself, and made his money in porn.

She's nothing that special.

Wembley... thats a good project on your CV.1 billion pounds and two years late. But it is an ok stadium...t
Its a fantastic stadium mate. That and Arsenals are the best ive seen

I like the way she positions herself as this big role model for women in business. She made a huge, smug rant about it on the apprentice the other week. Yes she was of course a pioneer of sorts as a woman involved in football but being put there by 2 men who made their money out of porn and then getting it on with one of the players straight away has slightly damaged that image a bit!
