Taraabt (spelling?) of Spurs. Currently on loan at Reading QPR and progressing well from what I've heard.

He also scored the best goal of the weekend.

Off topic, I know, but it's a bit one-eyed to point at Rafa and say: 'Look at all these bargains you missed.' Let's not forget he also signed Reina for £7m, Yossi for £5m, Agger for £6m, Xabi for £10m, Mascherano for £18m, and Torres for £20m. All of those players are worth WAY more than that now.
I don't think we'd get 'that' much more for masher if we sold him.
You're joking Neil? Minimum £30m and possibly as much as £35m.
I think we'd get closer to £18m than £30m to be honest.
Why? Unless we let his contract run down or he refuses to go to anyone but Barca, they will have to pay his market value, which must be £30m plus.
Why must his market value be circa £30M?

He's not that good.

In my eyes a £30m player should walk into a world XI, Mascherano would not do that. I'd be over the moon if we got £30M to be honest. Also there's been stories and rumours about him being unsettled for 12 months now, which if true make it a buyers market for the player?

Like Berbatov, Mendieta and (almost) Lescott?

We will get at least £25m for him

Because he's 25 years old, captain of Argentina, and widely recognised as the best all-out defensive midfielder in the world. And we got £30m for Xabi, who's three years older and not even a regular starter for his country.

We might end up getting less because, as you say, Mascher's made his desire to leave quite plain, but that doesn't alter the fact that his market value has gone up considerably since we first bought him. And, therefore, Rafa got a 'bargain' at £18m.

Even if he is worth 30m now, I'd find it hard to consider Mascherano a bargain at 18m

I think Masher's a good purchase, not necessarily 'a bargain'.

Anyone who spends £30M for Javier, IMO, is overspending, but that's not to say it won't happen.

Also you've got the bear in mind who made him international captain!

Yeah and everybody said that the mancs got bent over backwards as did City with Lescott.

Mendieta could've been an awesome player so I think that's a slightly different case.

Mascherano wasn't worth what we paid, take away the whole kia-Tevez-Hammers reserve contraversy and he goes for a sum closer to £10M

If we got £25M+ for him I'd be ecstatic.

Innit. Let's not forget what Real paid for Diarra.

I popped on at the weekend and read a post where someone was saying how we could have picked up Johnson for £4m, Defoe for £7.5m etc had Rafa had a better eye for players at the time. It was a decent little argument.
Not sure if anyone else has made this comment but... Sir Alex paid 18M for Carrick two years after Spurs paid 2.5M for him, Chelsea paid 21M for Shaun Wright Phillips, and Wenger spent 15M on Andriy Arshavin who's been playing in Russia for 12 years.

Alvaro Arbeloa (£3.5m, Real Madrid),

Michael Owen (free, from Newcastle United),

Antti Niemi (free, Unattatched to Portsmouth)

Tuncay Sanli (£5m, from Middlesbrough),

Eidur Gudjohnsen (€2.5m, to AS Monaco),

Shunsuke Nakamura (free, from Celtic),

Miguel Torres (€2m, from Real Madrid)

Esteban Granero (€4m, to Real Madrid)

Luis Garcia (free, from Atletico Madrid)

Fabio Cannavaro (free, to Juventus)

Javier Saviola (€5m, to Benfica)

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (€15m, to AC Milan),

Nihat Kahveci (€4.5m, to Besiktas)

Matias Fernandez (€4.5m, to Sporting Lisbon),

Oguchi Onyewu (free, from Standard Liege

Yoann Gourcuff (€13.7m, to Bordeaux),

Marco Marchionni (€5m, from Juventus),

Julio Cruz (free, to Lazio),

Lukas Podolski (€10m, from Bayern Munich),

Anatoliy Tymoschuk (free, Zenit St. Petersburg),

Ze Roberto (free, Hamburg SV),

Marko Marin (€9m, Werder Bremen),

Obafemi Martins (€10.5m, Newcastle United)

Here is a list of all the transfers i thought were affordable and have the ability to improve on our squad.

obviously some were destined to go to certain clubs - Podolski but none the less ive added them. Some pretty decent players there.

i would have loved Podolski and Saviola as back ups.
