Bargains...

I popped on at the weekend and read a post where someone was saying how we could have picked up Johnson for £4m, Defoe for £7.5m etc had Rafa had a better eye for players at the time. It was a decent little argument.

Anyways, i was just wondering who forumites think are the next potential bargain signings? We'll just use the top flight sides.

With the eight local players rule next season I dont foresee any English (or Welsh) players who will be bargains.

Maybe the foreign players who cant get into the team of 25 can be bargains.

Darren Bent is tailor made for us, he's quick, strong and versatile AND a good goalscorer. What a waste playing in the North East.

Bent, Turner, Cattermole and Jones were all linked with us in one way or another in recent times. Not sure if they were real or made up links. However, the general consensus on here seemed to be that none of them were good enough for Liverpool. On Saturday they all seemed to be better than anything we had.

i only rated bent amongst the linkups you mentioned.

Maybe not the best, but mind you, definitely better than voronin, ngog.... or add the two together.

I don't really rate him but looking through squad lists i guess Bentley will go on the cheap somewhere and perhaps perform well enough to get another big move.

Yep. Lorik Cana as well (who was immense on Saturday).

We need these calibre of players as squad players at least. All this 'not good enough for us' nonsense may be true for being first teamers, but they're certainly good enough to be in our squad.

Similar to Milner. Alot of people were suicidal when he was linked but hes proving to be a very hard working, effective performer for Villa.

I actually was mentioning bent when rafa went for torres. that one turned out alright but I still think we go for him although he'd cost a fortune now. I've always rated bent, wish we'd got him instead of keane.

But he wouldn't be happy on the bench as back-up to Torres (hence his move to Sunderland) and I can't see us changing our system to accommodate him in a 4-4-2.

Taraabt (spelling?) of Spurs. Currently on loan at Reading and progressing well from what I've heard.

that's always going to be a problem, we need quality to step in when torres is injuried but be patient when torres is fit. good luck finding such a player.

Off topic, I know, but it's a bit one-eyed to point at Rafa and say: 'Look at all these bargains you missed.' Let's not forget he also signed Reina for £7m, Yossi for £5m, Agger for £6m, Xabi for £10m, Mascherano for £18m, and Torres for £20m. All of those players are worth WAY more than that now.

I don't think we'd get 'that' much more for masher if we sold him.

You're joking Neil? Minimum £30m and possibly as much as £35m.

And milner cost roughly the same as Ryan Babel...and he's English..

Martin.

Being hailed as "the best crosser in the premier league" in one of today's papers.

However, didnt we sign JP on the same basis?!

No.

Stats showed that JP crossed the ball more than anyone else in the Premiership the year prior to us signing him.

Somebody misinterpreted that as him being the best crosser.

Quite. Add that to the fact they got relegated and it would be interesting to find out where these crosses were ending up (apart from Emile Heskey's head)

I think we'd get closer to £18m than £30m to be honest.

Quite often the reason a lot of these bargains come good is because they're played week in, week out. Bent for example would be a good squad addition, but he doesn't want to be a squaddie and is only really at his best when he's in the team every week scoring goals.

I have to say I've changed my mind with regards to Milner though. He is a good little player to have.

Why? Unless we let his contract run down or he refuses to go to anyone but Barca, they will have to pay his market value, which must be £30m plus.
