Hopefully Virgil will score 40 odd more goals this year, so he'll have a chance of winning it next year.
Apparently the rumours are Mane Boycott wasnt the fact he finished 4th.. it was over VVD not winning it..

If Virgil didn't win it then I'm pleased that Messi did. Messi is the greatest player of all time, and deserves to have more of them than Ronaldo who is 'only' an absolutely brilliant player. They were currently level, and Ronaldo will never win another one now, so it's fair that Messi wins this one, then it might be the passing of the baton to other players now moving forwards. You never know with Messi though, since he's come back from injury this season, he's back to himself digging them out of the shit. And he could keep dropping back and continue playing at the level he is for more years to come.
This is a spine-tingling list. Virge is in a good company...
This also puts it into perspective - some of the greatest defenders to ever play the game never got higher than 2nd or 3rd in Ballon D’Or voting at the very peak of their careers. Van Dijk’s 2nd place is not a disappointment, it’s a historic achievement.
