Back-up CB?

How do you think Benitez should approach this problem? Hyypiä was the perfect back-up for us, sadly he thought he was too good for the bench (and rightly so). Should we go for an old, experienced cb alá Distin or Mellberg (for £2.2m), should we buy a young up-and-coming cb or do we have enough cover in the reserves?

Mellberg has done surprisingly well in Seria A and seems to be a good pro aswell.

Thoughts?

Melberg or Distin would be lovely...What we really need is that Finnish guy in the German league.

Mellberg signed for Olympiacos

And that Finnish lad I assume is Hyypia 😀

Well it better be, because Petri Pasanen is no where near good enough!

I wouldnt mind Metzelder.

Tall, experienced and good in the air. He shouldn't be too expensive either.

Didn't Rafa mention that he was gonna give San Jose and Kelly a go this pre-season?

I've never seen either play, I hope to god though that they're much better than the youth teams center halfs.. cos they were diabolical.

I think it's a waste of resources. Having Hyypia here was a lovely luxury, we're used to being spoilt for CB's over the reign of Benitez - not many clubs have 3 CB's as good as ours have been, let alone four.

We should put faith in Agger having a full season because we've got more pressing issues to address.

It's a slight risk but that's football.

gutted hyppia has gone. its true he WAS a luxury, he was far too good to be a 4th choice CB, but it was good while it lasted :'(

I agree with that but as I said before we were lucky with sami. look at the manu game, it would have been a big ask to expect a kid to step up given the circumstances.

In theory we should be okay with Carra, Agger and Skrtel. All three are good players who will expect to play lots of games. And so they should, as the effectiveness of the defensive unit relies upon all members having an understanding with each other.

If all three stay fit then that is a problem in itself, especially as we now won't have the option of moving Carra to right back every so often. Buying another defender will therefore only increase this problem.

However, as the last few seasons have shown, defenders staying fit and available is an issue. We shouldn't really have needed Sami so much in the last few years (even though for my money he was possibly the better option than some anyway, even if was regarded as backup).

We have enough defenders in the reserves, so give one of them a go. If all goes to plan whoever it is won't need to play that much but if they do and if they are good then great, we might save ourselves some money in the future. If they are not so good then we can always try to get someone in in January.

What we will learn though is whether or not Carra, Skrtel and Agger are reliable enough. If we need to go outside of them then the answer will clearly be no and we will need to make changes next year.

Sometimes that opportunity is all a young player needs. Remember Rob Jones? He made his debut at Old Trafford because of injuries to other players.

Or a complete disaster like Carragher when asked to play CB the first time against the scums.

Anyway I still prefer to have the kids as our 4th choice CB.

Whatever you do, Rafa, don't sign Heinze.

It wouldn't exactly be a surprise if he did, though, would it?

And in the long run that turned out appallingly badly didn't it?

I am a bit worried about set-pieces with our defence - with carr and agger I think we are vulnerbale to long balls and skrtel hasn' convinced me yet. Sneaky bid for richards could prove to be useful in this rgard.

What are Kelly and San Jose like specifically?

I honestly have no idea.

Kelly:

Strong defender who missed the entire 2005/06 season with a serious back problem, and only returned to action in the latter part of the 2006/07 season. He is highly regarded by the club however, and spent the following pre-season training with Gary Ablett's reserve squad.

He impressed sufficiently to earn a permanent place at Melwodd with Ablett's group, and although he found appearances for the second string hard to come by, he impressed whenever called upon. Martin's best position is centre back, but he is also comfortable at right back and is a player of great promise.

San Jose:

Mikel is a very promising player who joined the reds from Athletic Bilbao in 2007. Equally at home in the centre of defence or in a holding midfield role, San Jose is a player who is never ruffled and always seems to have time on the ball.

He established himself in Gary Ablett's reserve side very quickly, and impressed in defence and midfield. He was an unused substitute for the first team at Stamford Bridge in a Premiership game, and it seems only a matter of time before he makes his bow at senior level.
