We done that. Not southampton.

Sent from my SM-G935F using SixCrazyMinutes mobile app

Both had a hand in it. Someone at the LFC end of things went flapping their gums when they shouldn't, for sure, but Southampton didn't have to do what they did either, and don't go thinking they did it for the good of the game. They did it to force a bidding war after the player seemed to have taken that prospect away from them. With a bit of luck their greed will now turn around and bite them on their oversized @rses.

Just sign Bonucci for the same price as van Dijk would have cost. We show Southampton just how unrealistic their demands were, while stopping Conte from linking with with Bonucci. I used to do something like this on Football Manager all time. Easy.

Laporte, Manolas, Gimenez (1 year left on his contract), Koulibaly, Rugani, Lindeløf.

These are the kind of players we should be looking at. Players that will improve us at once, and wont need much time, if any, to settle.
I dont agree about buying an uproven 20 year old. But rather 22-23 + who have a couple of more seasons under their belt.
Will cost a bit more but should help solve our defensive issues this season.

Semedo's gone to Villarreal so that's a non-starter.

De Vrij might have some knee injury issues I think. Right now, I think we should just go with young and hopefully hungry than older and proven (in the Premier League). It's risky, but I kinda' hate having to keep buying someone who goes to Southampton to triple or quadruple his price before we wake up and put money in. The key is in not sinking crazy money in when they're unproven (e.g. Markovic); we did it right with Coutinho (what a fucking steal that was) and arguably with Can. So we actually can do that - we just don't do it enough.

So right now, I think we could perhaps take a chunk of the money saved from the Van Dijk deal and spend it on a younger, seemingly rising CB who has had a couple senior seasons under his belt, e.g. Issa Diop (Toulouse), Diego Llorente (Real Madrid on loan to Malaga last season), Diego Reyes (Porto on loan to Espanyol last season), Wesley Hoedt (Lazio - though Roopy thinks he might not be ready for another couple of years), maybe Nikals Stark (Hertha Berlin, though he just extended his contract recently), etc.

Not seen any of these guys in a full game, so I don't know if they're truly any good. I just wanted to name-drop a bunch of guys so I can circle back to boast if / when one of them does actually succeed a few years from now. 😀
I see that Rosco and a few others agree with you. However how many times has this attitude already come back to bite us ? And then posters will say "why are we always buying unproven youngsters when if we'd have signed "Proven Player X or Y' we'd have challenged for the PL etc.

And there is the crux of the matter, do you want to challenge for the PL title, and even CL, next season or not ? It seems to me that we'd have to be extremely lucky to pick up a relative youngster and turn him into a (exaggerating) Hansen, Lawrenson, Ferdinand etc. whereas that chance is far higher going for a proven 25/26 yr old still on the rise. Otherwise we're going to be relying on a Lovren/Matip partnership again.

Yes, a proven CB in his mid-20s will cost a lot more but then the potential return is so much quicker and higher that the fee would be virtually irrelevant if he were to join Matip and provide a stable rock-solid CB partnership for the next 7 years.

I feel there is a massive opportunity this window, before City and United (and possibly Arsenal) get themselves sorted (and one of them will, in short time), for us to be truly competitive next season. I don't want us to waste that opportunity by taking a higher risk than necessary.

Yeah, there's no magic formula, although some clubs - Spurs, Southampton - appear to have more scouting success with young, cheaper, or mid-priced talent.

But you generally do require a mix of "will be great" and "are great right now" and that usually means spending BIG sometimes.

Fine player though he currently is, he'd turn to sh!te as soon as he arrived. No More Italians.

Given the persisting rumours about us turning to De Vrij now, I went to look at some clips of him. He looks heavy and hard, and er, it'd probably be challenging to decide whether Klavan or him would win in a sprint. When he hits the grass to make a tackle, it looks like he needs cranes to pull him up from the pitch.

17m is our rumoured bid for him in the final year of his contract, and with a pretty long list of injuries. I don't like this one.

Yes, I can only remember seeing him play for Holland in 2014, and he looked fairly decent on the ball, but he was playing in a back three then (I think) which is easier for CBs, but he is slow as fuck, yeah.

Surely a better player than Klavan, though

Here's a candidate we should at the very least 'monitor' in case he's not going to be seen as a definite starter at the Bridge come next Season. Perhaps we even should try and steal him before he even gets there..

Calm, clever, collected and exactly what we need. Would be a marvellous foil for Matip for seasons to come.

Andreas Christensen, 21

De Vrij seem to have some major injury issues though. Dont think thats the right one for us.

I hope we are not already looking at 2nd and 3rd choices.

What's the whole point of getting CL football when we can't capitalise on it.

De Vrij looks meh. No thanks.

Edited for completeness. 😉

Never heard of him. *cough*

I think we should have a look at Lewis Dunk from Brighton. Of course I'm all for getting Tah and other Europeans with potential but I wouldn't mind gambling on Dunk depending on the price of course. He's not only a good defender, he can score goals as well.
Tall
Strong
No nonsense tackler
Good in the air

Brighton conceded the fewest amount of goals in the Championship too.

Here's a stupid vid:
