thought he did well when he came on, and that was a terrific cross for gerrard.

He did, it was and I was pleasantly surprised.

Why were you surprised? Babel's played well for five games in a row now. He should have started v Fiorentina IMO.

Let's not sign Royston Drenthe.

Babel is to fight for a role at Liverpool to earn a World Cup place, saying in the Daily Star: "Not being called up by Holland has definitely scared me into doing something.

"It's all about making the most of my chances in the first team now.

"The situation for me is clear. This has to be the year for me. I am trying to do whatever it takes to get into the team.

"If I give everything and the situation is still difficult, then you have to be honest with yourself.

"But I'm still confident that I can be a very important player for Liverpool.

"There's a World Cup at the end of the season and my position for the Holland national team is in danger.

"For the first time in 33 games, I wasn't called up for the national team. That was very scary. It's clear I have to play a lot of games for Liverpool to earn a ticket to the World Cup.

"The Holland coach made a statement that he wants his players playing for their clubs. It's clear I need to be playing more for Liverpool."

That's very interesting, Ryan, partly because of what it says about your lack of motivation for playing for Liverpool rather than de Nederlands, and partly because it suggests that even when you DO get 'scared' into 'doing something' that still seems to involve little more than SITTING ON YOUR BIG FAT ARSE TWITTERING AND TEXTING!

To be fair, he's been good in his last five games. Annoying though that it needed a threat to his international place to shock him into some kind of form.

RYAN BABEL admits he has been “scared†into resurrecting his Liverpool career by the fear of missing out on next summer’s World Cup.

And the Dutch forward is determined to repay the faith of Rafael Benitez and prove he can still be a success at Anfield.

Babel has endured a frustratingly inconsistent time since his much-vaunted arrival from Ajax for £11.5million in July 2007, and has struggled to earn a regular first-team place.

It cost the 22-year-old his place in Holland’s initial squad for the friendly against Japan and World Cup qualifier against Scotland in early September, although he was later called up following an injury to PSV Eindhoven’s Ibrahim Afellay.

Nevertheless, Holland head coach Bert van Marwijk has warned his players they will jeopardise their place on the plane to South Africa should spend much of the season sat on the bench.

And having missed Euro 2008 after tearing ankle ligaments, Babel is desperate not to be absent from another major finals.

“Not being called up by Holland has definitely scared me into doing something,†said the forward. “The Holland coach made a statement that he wants his players playing for their clubs. It’s clear I need to be playing more for Liverpool.

“I’ve realised for myself this has to be the year for me. There’s a World Cup at the end of the season, and my position for the Holland national team is in danger.

“For the first time in 33 games, I wasn’t called up for the national team. That was very scary. It’s clear I have to play a lot of games for Liverpool to earn a ticket to the World Cup.

“It’s all about making the most of my chances in the first team now. The situation for me is clear. This has to be the year for me. I am trying to do whatever it takes to get into the team.

“If I give everything and the situation is still difficult, then you have to be honest with yourself. But I’m still confident that I can be a very important player for Liverpool.â€

Babel came off the bench at West Ham United a fortnight to create the winner for Fernando Torres, before starting the Carling Cup win at Leeds United and scoring twice as substitute against Hull City on Saturday.

He also made a late cameo in the midweek Champions League defeat at Fiorentina and is pressing his claims for a start at Chelsea on Sunday.

“It was good to play more or less 90 minutes against Leeds, that has given me a boost,†said Babel. “I’m working hard in training and hopefully it’s just a matter of a time that I get more chances. I will have to be mentally strong. I had a similar situation at Ajax, and I learned a lot from that. I have to be patient.â€

Babel’s contribution at Upton Park earned praise from Torres, and the Dutchman is grateful for such support.

“I am finding that a lot of people still believe in me,†he added. “It gives me the confidence to carry on and believe in myself and them, and work hard for them.

“The manager believes in me, and the supporters believe in me too. Sometimes players have a doubt over whether supporters believe in them, but if I speak for myself, I still feel the supportes believe in me and that I can make it at Liverpool. I want to pay back that faith.â€

I couldn't give a shit what the reason is about the change in attitude. if liverpool benefits who cares?
Because it implies that the reason he was so shit so often in the past is that he couldn't really be bothered as he was getting picked for Holland anyway.

I'm not bothered. Obviously I want players to be motivated because they are wearing the red of liverpool but I realised a long time ago that's was me projecting what I want onto players. the players are just doing a job and getting paid. so as long as they put in good performances I couldn't care less what is motivating them.

Tonight was amazin i didnt think it wud b so good it was like eatin ur best food wen ur really hungry!!!!

I wouldn't be bothered about the source of his motivation if he'd been ace for the last two years. But given that he's been mostly shit - seemingly not for lack of confidence, but because he couldn't be arsed - I find that really quite aggravating.

like I said, it doesn't bother me. if anything he is being too honest, I'd perfer that than someone who kisses the badge one week and puts in a transfer request the next. yes, I admit it, I am very jaded with football currently.
