He's been as good as dead since that accident. Severe brain damage. But yes, as LTW said, he's not officially dead yet, and it's down to the family to chose what next.

Very sad that a man like him in the middle of his life and in good health is in such a terrible hopeless condition.

I will forever remeber the joy and excietment I felt that day when I came home from school and read in the paper that you were signing for my favourite club. The first Israeli player to play in England and for the best club in the world.
I will always remeber that game v. Villa.
Very sad.

He was born in Cairo and was an Egyptian wasn't he?

Ronny Rosenthal was our first Isreal born player

I remember when Gulf War 1 kicked off and Ronny was being interviewed on the radio when the dude asked him if he would ever feel compelled to protect his country. He said that if any Scuds fell on his hometown that he would. The dude then asked where that was. Ronny replied 'Birkdale'.

Putting the politics (i.e. the 'why') aside, Avi Cohen was one of ~850,000 Jews who left the Arab world in the 1950s and settled in Israel. They lost their citizenship in the Arab world, and hence only had Israeli (or potentially Italian if they were in Libya, French if in Morocco/Algeria etc)

That's interesting. I knew his parents have immigrated to Israel from Egypt, but I never knew he was actually born in Egypt.
Anyway, he probably came to Israel as a young boy or even a baby, and grew up here. He played for the Israeli national teams and therefore he's Israeli. I'm sure he always considered himself an Israeli.

Poor guy RIP and YNWA

Liverpool Football Club will observe a period of applause ahead of tonight's match with Wolverhampton Wanderers to recognise the fine career of former defender Avi Cohen, who died this morning aged 54.

Both sets of players will also wear black armbands to mark the sad news, which follows a serious motorcycle accident last week.

Avi is survived by his wife and three children. His funeral is set for later today.

The Israeli left-back joined Liverpool in 1979, making 24 appearances and scoring a famous goal in a title clincher against Aston Villa.

To give him his full title, Abraham "Avi" Cohen was the first foreign player to represent Liverpool since Robert Rudham arrived 24 years earlier.

After returning to his homeland in 1981, Avi came back to these shores in 1987 to play for former Liverpool skipper Graeme Souness at Rangers.

Liverpool Football Club would once again like to offer its condolences to Avi's family at this difficult time.
