Fabio Aurelio, out of contract at the end of the season, is to be offered another pay-as-you-play deal after rejecting Liverpool’s initial offer.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez said: "Fabio has been really unlucky. When we spoke to him about a contract extension he had an injury and he has had lots of injuries in the past. We made him an offer and his agent rejected it. Then he suffered another injury and we have had to analyse the situation again."

Benitez added that Aurelio will receive another offer in the coming weeks: "We will talk again in the future because he is a good person, a great professional and a great player. Maybe his situation needs to be looked at in a different way and he needs to be realistic."

After missing the start of the 2009/2010 season with a knee injury, Aurelio has played nine games for Liverpool in the Premier League and Champions League this season.

Signing him up on a pay as you play deal wouldn't be too bad as he's a good player when fit.

Our left flank will be in need of major surgery next summer though.

I'd imagine if he was a genuine first choice player he'd take it, but as he's just as likely not to play for tactical reasons as fitness reasons, an agent will urge him to move on.

It needs it in Jan.

Pay as you play would be great for Aurelio, Degan, and Agger.

i think he would certainly be Rafa's first choice if Rafa could trust his physical conditioning.

Agger would laugh at a pay as you go contract..

Of course but considering how much he plays we should be either paying him less or seriously looking at this route.

Yes, but doesn't that almost take us full circle? If Rafa could trust his physical conditioning, he wouldn't be offered a pay per play deal. He's been declared fit plenty of times and left on the bench or out of the squad. One way or another that means he'll be unlikely to play often enough for his agent's liking, when the agent will say 'We can get you the security of a good 'proper' contract elsewhere'. So while it makes sense from the club's point of view I'd be surprised if he takes it.

I don't give a fuck if he stays or goes, we still need to buy a decent Leftback because Benitez hasn't managed to find one yet

Even better, a pay-dependant-on-SCM-rating-thread.

Lucas would lose his mortgage!
