I just think we've been blowing out of our arses since the first game against Fulham. I put this down to:
- Aging profile of our midfield (where energy is more important than quality in Klopp's system)
- A long, and ultimately deflating season last year
- A short summer break (albeit without an international tournament)
- A shortened pre-season
- An unnecessary trip to the Far East during that shortened pre-season (WTAF?)
- Over-working last season of key players in the spine (van Dijk played a huge amount of minutes on the back of missing virtually all of the previous season with injury and Fabinho played a lot of minutes because the players around him were constantly injured, meaning he was often rushed back quickly from his own injury absences)
Klopp's football relies on 3 guys in the middle who work their bollocks off and a forward line that leads the press. We don't have that this year.
Whisper it quietly, we're also missing Mane's direct and aggressive running.
City, meanwhile, with their pass pass pass pass, snooze, wake up, pass a bit more football can keep it going. We can't.
Arsenal have done fuck all for a decade and have finally woken up as their "promising youngsters" have started to deliver more end product.
It's OK for us to have the odd 30-year old in a key position, but only if they have fresh and energetic players around them. At the moment we're often putting out a midfield 3 with a combined average of 90+, or else the younger guys out there don't play with the energy and aggression required (e.g. Elliot, who I really like as a player, but he's just not that type of player).
This is no criticism of the players being used, Klopp essentially broke both Can and Wijnaldum in their final seasons with us by working them into the ground. We can't expect the aging players we have to endure that kind of stress, week-in, week-out, especially when many of them have poor injury records to being with (and again, there's something of the chicken and egg about that).
We just need to patch up between now and the World Cup break, then make best use of the guys who get a rest while the tournament is on and allow those who've taken the most strain recently to recover (which Mo and Sadie didn't get last year after AFCON). This is going to be a weird, almost unique season, and a lot will hinge on who plans best for the second half after the World Cup.

I think there's also part of it where you think, they're extracting every last bit of sweat out of me, are they doing the same to themselves?

The team needed some help in the summer and it deserved it. Instead it was made weaker and then asked to go again.

If it is simply fatigue, mental and physical, then surely this was forseeable and given that we were all concerned about it, safe to say it was.

Frustrating that the club have chosen to do very little to prevent the situation we now find ourselves in.

Leeds clocked up more distance on Saturday than in any game since they got promoted (bearing in mind Bielsa also had a reputation for working his team hard that's quite the stat).
I don't think it's just that we're knackered, I think that opposition teams are now working out that if they work harder than us they stand a chance of getting a result. In the past, many of them probably didn't believe that and saved their legs for the following game.

Clubs sniff blood when they play us now. That’s not what this squad are used to.

I'd be staggered if we don't sign two midfielders in early January. There's just no getting over the fact that the squad needs at least a refresh if not a rebuild and that has to start at the first opportunity if we're to have any chance of getting in the top four.

On January 31, we will get an article on Arthur Melo returning to full fitness in three weeks time and will be like a new signing. Highlights of his legendary performance in the reserve game one month ago, will be all over our social media channels.

Another piece of good news which would be released around that time is Keita signing the contract extension. Mainly because his agent would have realized in the January transfer window that no club in Europe is mental enough to offer the wages we would, even on a free. That might actually tip most of SCM into full blown madness.

Guaranteed to bring in someone we sold 3 years ago in on loan, as well as lauding keitas fitness. My guess is Grujic or Jay spearing to get registered

@peekay - apart from @Frogfish , most of SCM are way past full blown madness, like our players who are regularly showing an empty tank, there is actually nothing left in our madness tank. It was on edge when we signed no fucking midfielder in the summer, and now the performances have tipped most of us over the edge. There is nothing more left in me to get mad about, I am just hoping for the best coz there is fuck all we can do.

Froggy is as mad as the rest of us. He is just displaying different symptoms. The poor soul was predicting a 6-0 victory for us in the Leeds game after watching us play in the PL all season. We are all descending into madness through a phase of pessimism. Froggy is approaching it through the optimistic side, thats all. Of course, once Keita's contract extension is announced, it will converge and all of us will be like

City had a similar-ish season to us (yes we played more games) still nearly a similar amount. The difference between City is that they causally dropped 60m on Leeds Phillips and bought a defender or two AND Haaland. We on the other hand lost our key player in Mane (replaced him with a 'rough diamond Nunex) and didn't do diddly squat with our ageing, injury-prone, exhausted midfield. We are currently sporting two relatively inexperienced teenagers in our midfield that have become team regulars this season.

Gen-gen pressing takes a lot out of you, its a draining style of football...If you dont refresh more often then this is the result...injuries, ageing and tiredness.

FSG are going to have to invest in this team next summer...What is the point in having a manager like Jurgen Klopp knowing the style of football he likes to implement if you aren't giving him the funds/tools to carry out the project?

Watching us play, it’s giving me Aston Villa vibes under Gerrard towards the end - it seems Klopp has lost or is losing some of the dressing room. I may be wrong and I hope I’m wrong, but there seems to be a lot of tension with Fabinho especially.

I wonder if the loss of Mane and the massive contract for Salah has caused some of this (as well as some of his team selections).

Well, that’s only sort of accurate - they sold players like Sterling, Jesus and Zinchenko while they were still young and valuable.

that would be the equivalent of us selling Kostas, Jota and Jones.

City pump primed themselves a decade ago and are now self sufficient in transfers - if we want to have a major rebuild, even if the owners dip into their pockets, then sone hard decisions on Alisson/Kelleher, Trent, Kostas/Robbo, Van Dijk, Gomez, Jones, Elliot, Fabinho and Jota are required - we’ll need to sell players that clubs will pay good money for.

Matip, Henderson, Thiago, Firmino, Milner and arguably Mo have no sell on value.

I say Mo, because there are only a couple of teams that could afford his salary and fee - and why would they.

@peekay - after posting back to you today on the train, I was walking home listening to a Bengali song (yes sometimes I connect with my ethnic side) - but whilst listening to the song I was thinking of Liverpool FC. It is actually a love song in which the main chorus has a part that translates to - "...the mind does not want it, but the heart does not understand". It occurred to me at that moment that actually I adore these players we have at our club for some of the great moments they have given us over the last 5/6 years (well those that have been with us). There have been many, and as for our manager who some want out ... I say to them - name me a manager who has managed to challenge one of the richest clubs in the world domestically, and at the same time taken us to 3 European Cup Finals .... there is no one.

I don't think we can sign someone for the midfield in Jan and that will solve our problems - just don't believe, it - I am going to remain faithful to these players who took us so far last season and gave me one of the most joyful seasons ever - period. I don't care what happens against Spurs - but just get behind them, despite all the negative criticism from us fans, and media - I see a team that is genuinely trying but for moments of indecision, ill fortune, bad timing or whatever they are failing to get over the line. Nothing major is lost yet, we are still in 3 cup competitions and 4th is still possible. We had 20 shots at Leeds the other night, and 10 on target - as long as those chances keep getting created we have a chance. I get it - its hard to see when you come away with draws and losses - it drives us to madness. But really, what fucking else is there to do but get behind them.

P.S - for all you Curtis Jones haters out there... fuck you !!!

I don't buy this, the drop off started well before the CL final. We ended last season scrapping through games, starting poorly and giving away cheap goals.
Which in fact just goes to underline the fatigue not void it.

We seem to hold on to our fringe players unnecessarily. Nat Phillipps and Rhys Williams could have gotten us 10-12 million combined after the season they had. Since we bought Konate, not quite sure why we are hanging on to them. Two summers ago, West Ham or any other similar club would have paid us 20 million for Ox. He is injured most of the time and rarely plays when he is available also. We could have used that money for some decent midfielder.

Klopp seems to have this extended sense of loyalty, to all of his players. Whilst this is an honourable trait it's clearly not in the best interest of the team. His deep faith may be an influence in this respect.

Every now and then a squad player will develop into something far more than anticipated but once it has been established a certain player is unlikely to be one of those, and even worse is injury prone, then it should be de rigueur to move them on and replace with another having potential. You're not losing anything but buy backs clauses cover us just in case.

Our squad is littered with these players.

I'm fine with Klopp not being ruthless – I much prefer a world-class manager with his kind of character in my team than someone like Mourinho or SAF. But someone in the club has to be a ruthless bastard. Instead the owners seem to hide behind Klopp's belief in his players to justify their lack of investment.

It's stupid, really – why waste a manager like Klopp coaching the likes of Ox who you know have no long-term future here when you could buy a few youngsters with top-class potential and see if Klopp can help them realize it. He might be loyal, but he also loves developing players and is damn good at it – it's a shame the club didn't give him enough new blood to work with in the past few seasons.

I think we've got rid of all sorts of players. Some I'd rather we had right now.

The loyalty thing could extend to some of our older mainstays, but on the fringes of the squad, not really. We got rid of origi for fucks sake.

It's the players we can't get the fuck out, that we desperately want to, that are the issue. We're not allowed to write them off and they become lampreys slowing us down and bleeding us dry.

Maybe he was hanging on to those older ones until the youth system started spitting out more players we could add to the first team or sell.

Absolutely agree though - we need to sell more to be able to buy more- tough decisions required.

Origi is a poor example - he was here for 8 years and wanted to move on. Fair enough, why are people still going on about him? Ditto Minimino who left because he wanted game time (under utilised here so who could blame him)
There are very few examples of those we wanted who left and many of those who did/do nothing who stayed.
