Atalanta (H) - EL Thursday 8:00pm

I'm getting angrier with this one more and more over time.

We didn't even need to win this game.

We've been shipping big chances game after game after game. We've been doing it more and more as the games matter more and more. We've been missing big chances more and more as well. Our season is unravelling.

Our attack is incoherent and wasteful.
Our midfield is defined by the form of one player, while the rest just look jaded.
What most disgusts me though are the fullbacks. Our best overall team displays in recent memory are with a fullback playing at fullback as a fullback. All our best play under klopp is defined by this position. Instead we were treated to tsimikas looking like he was poorly acting like he was looking for his lost dog, when in reality he has taken his first forays into what will become a promising career in serial murder and his dog is in several ziplocks in a chest freezer.

Then on the other side. Gomez. Inverting. It's been fairly redundant when Trent has been up to it, but Trent has the technical ability to play a ball, join an attack, take a credible shot on goal, and in general play technical football. With Trent, even though it is less effective than everything he used to do, it's still a neat trick. Hes so good that we can still watch him be threatening from less threatening positions. Mind you, it's not fundamentally sound at all, but ooh diagonal pass, what were we talking about? Oh, gomez. Klopp really fucked this one up. He's looked tired and out of form. Should we let him do the basics for a game, or how about we unleash his incredible potential in the center of the pitch. He needs to invert so he can cover, but the fact that he offers very little playing off salah, means that when he ends up inside and high, we take the lung busting run risk we are meant to avoid from inversion, and we take it for nothing.

Remember when Gomez doing a Trent impression was just making shittier crosses from the overlap and being reasonably sound defensively? Could we try that again? He's a utility player. He isn't going to be part of any good complicated interplay with Salah on the right, he isn't who we want on the ball breaking the lines, and we have others who can do that.

Why, when we aren't playing well, and we have different lineups out of necessity, are we overcomplicating our tactics? It isn't making us harder to beat, it isn't making us control games. It's making limited players look fucking horrible and confused. This was a rare occasion where klopp got things badly wrong, at the first and second time of asking. We were better with kids because with kids he's asking players to do what they know, and he's asking them to do less. Can't we go back to doing that with the senior players a bit?

We let Dreamy start the thread for why?

Because secretly we need the misery, we feed of it - we aren’t happy unless we’re gurning about something, even when we win we need something to moan about.

Basically we’ve all become the moany gammon-faced old aged buggers that up until now we could only accuse @Judge Jules and @Portly of being.

I think yesterday was a one off in all honesty in terms of general play and defensive performance. It was all over the place. Klopp fucked up massively with the team selection. It was nearly arrogant in some ways. We played a much better team then we gave them credit in the preparations it seemed.

In regards to our defensive numbers in the last few games I dont agree. We are the second best team in the league after Arsenal for XGC for the last 4 games. Which gives me some comfort in thinking yesterday was a one off.

...and Macca too?

It's time @Dreambeliever took over match threads. His late intervention saw us almost grab top 4

He did take over the match thread.

For Atlanta.

Someone should be lighting the kindling around the stake he should be tied to… @momoWASboss has turned up with some petrol to make sure there’s no mistake!!!

Haven’t you learned anything about baring your buttcheeks to the Jinxy Gods!

The man’s a living, breathing match thread catastrophe!!!!

This is so absolutely and immaculately spot on.

There is a lot to be said for just playing a 'boring' formation of 433 with attacking full backs and knowing our players are man for man better than the opposition. I actually think we looked better a month ago when we had Clark, McConnell & Danns making some appearances, as they are fit, in shape and as you say were just playing their game.

Trent was re-learning his game for this 'inversion' stuff - it was ok (but felt worse than the alternative for him) as he is one of the mot gifted footballers of a generation. Asking Joe Gomez to also re-learn this role is dire.

Some of our squad players have really excelled this season in the face of injuries (Kelleher, Gomez for the most part at LB, Bradley) but some have really shown they are not fit to be long term members of our squad (Gakpo, Tsimikas, Gravenberch).

I have a fear that we will continue trying this new bullshit against Palace instead of just trying to play more orthodox and simple football

That's one bad thing with Kopp..

He gets his tactics badly wrong we end up getting twatted..

Where conceding too many goals.. Chopping and changing ain't helping things because injuries.

Alison, TAA, Robbo are being missed now.. For sure...

3 nil at home .

That has to go down as one of the worst displays in front of the home crowd since Real Madrid back in the BR days..

Lads, if there's one thing I know, it's that this will get fixed, and quickly.

Backbone lads. Backbone.

Top of the league (2nd on GD)
STILL in the EL.

We're having our shite patch of the season, and it's involved remaining top of the league AND we are still in the EL. It's not over yet.

This is not Brendan Rodgers team. It's a team that's had a BRILLIANT season so far.

There's definitely problems, but they are *very* fixable.

But if you need a moan, have a moan. But be done by Sat. As we are back in business Sunday.

Seriously - no petrol please, just lots of semi damp wood. Make this slow & lingering

This match reminded me a bit of those European games back in the 90s. We used to get drawn against fairly average sides back then too and end up losing miserably at home.

Difference is that back then we were generally shit and never won anything anyway. We're supposed to be good now.

Phew. I and a few others held our collective breaths for a moment there. Though to be fair I mostly moan at other posters not the team (often).

US teams are permitted to play in UEFA competitions now?

The EL has gone mate. You can talk all you like about winning by 4 over there but it's not happening. The 3rd goal saw to that.

Salzburg, PSG, Auxerre? Those were the days
Lose the first leg 3-0 then win the 2nd leg 2-0.

We turned it round against Barca, Origi sorted it.

Origi had three shots and scored three goals in the CL that season. Two against barca and one against Spurs in the final. So we can do it - but we need to create *checks notes* 75 chances for Nunez, per half
We were very impressive when we lost to Barca. That game defied reason. Other than the result, there's no equivalence.

Instanbul Says hello...
Looking at our European History, we have done it a few times. Not quiet Barca but we can't be counted out. Not sure worth the bother this time out.

Look we have low expectations. It will make it easier. A quick goal or two and it's on.

I really don't mind if we lose. The PL is everything. One more, and the Klopp era will have the appropriate send off.

he just needs these lads to get their arses together, and SCM to stop being midgets

Also Spirit of Shankly need to feck off till it's all over
