Player ratings from Squawka:

Liverpool

Caoimhin Kelleher – 4 – A tricky night for the young Irishman who simply didn’t have the same impact as his goalkeeping counterpart on the opposite side of the pitch.
Ki-Jana Hoever – 6 – An encouraging performance from the young and highly-regarded Dutchman who worked well in tandem with Elliot on the right flank.
Sepp van den Berg – 4 – Looked slick and tidy when playing out from the back, but defensively he has some way to go before he can make the step up to the first-team reckoning.
Morgan Boyes – 5 – Another who looked comfortable with the ball at his feet, and certainly Boyes, as well as Berg, made some vital challenges and got their shorts muddy, but Villa simply found openings far too easily.
Tony Gallacher – 5 – Surged forward and offered plenty of energy on the left flank, but Villa had a lot of joy down their right-hand side with Gallagher overwhelmed at times.
Isaac Christie-Davies – 6 – Looked slick, elegant and tidy in possession. His passion and overeagerness got the better of him at times as he rushed into challenges, but on the whole the 22-year-old had a very neat game in the middle of the park.
Pedro Chirivella – 6 – Sat in front of the Liverpool defence, playing almost as a metronome, spraying passes and dictating the tempo. On a difficult night for Critchley’s young side, the captain can hold his head high.
Herbie Kane – 5 – The midfielder offered plenty of tenacity and industry on the turf but squandered some big chances and failed to leave an imprint on this encounter.
Harvey Elliott – 7 – A real menace whenever the ball found his feet. It’s hard to believe Elliot is only 16 because he played like a Liverpool first-team regular tonight. There was a maturity and audacity about his play that perhaps indicates he has a long career on Merseyside.
Thomas Hill – 5 – Darted about the pitch looking to involve himself but was unable to produce the same influential performance as Elliot on the opposing flank.
Luis Longstaff – 4 – Never an easy task coming up against two Premier League centre-backs as a young forward, and that proved the case tonight as Longstaff struggled to really impose himself in the final third and unsettle Villa’s backline.
Substitutes:
Jack Bearne (for Longstaff 64) – 5 –
Came on for the final 30 minutes and certainly offered a renewed urgency up-top but unable to breach Nyland’s net.
Leighton Clarkson (for Christie-Davies 77) – 5 – Brought on for the final 15 minutes or so and looked tidy enough in possession.
James Norris (for Hoever 82) – N/A – Substituted on for the final 10 minutes.

They need to lift their heads now. Game is over. Play for pride. Remember Klopp is watching in Dubai.
This competition carries no weight with Klopp, and i can't say I blame him. He took with him Andy Lonergan to Qatar and Curtis Jones, which was him sticking two fingers to the FA

I'm extremely disappointed. Usually when I turn off because I have to pick my kids up, or for some other unavoidable reason we suddenly come to life and overturn massive deficits.

I am losing my power to turn games around for us by not watching.

I apologise and take full responsibility for this loss.

They may not have won but the passing accuracy in the first half had me glued in, it was so good, ling range short range, and that first stat @King Binny being better than the average PL accuracy is rings true when you see it. There were moments where I thought .. shit is Xabi Alonso back playing for us ?

I also thought that their confidence playing those Central passes out of the back was outstanding. Building the triangles, quick turns upfield under pressure, all really good.

Nice touch by Smith and Terry.

Pretty damn amazing stats (bar the all important one) for the youngsters and they were more than a tad unlucky with the first two goals. Better finishing and luck and they could actually have been well in that match.

Credit our travelling supporters too - they were loud and gave wonderful support to the young lads, traveling down there even though they knew we were likely on a hiding.

========

Liverpool stand-in manager Neil Critchley talking to Sky Sports:
"I thought we were magnificent. We were fantastic from the start, we had a couple of chances from the first whistle. We were really unfortunate to concede and then find ourselves 2-0 down. It was an incredible night and no-one wanted it to end. The support we had was unbelievable.
"The conduct of the Villa players was first class. For Dean Smith and John Terry to come in to our dressing room after the game and say the things they said... They said 'keep going, good luck' and wished us the best. A moment I will remember and the players will remember for the rest of their lives.
"Some of them showed the potential to one day play for us, or in the Premier League. They will know it was just part of their journey. My overwhelming feeling is one of immense pride."

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith on BBC Radio 5 Live: "It was probably the weirdest major competition quarter-final I've seen or been involved in. They started brightly, they've got some technically gifted young players. We were clinical, professional and showed a good attitude. It was a bit of a no-win for us apart from getting through to a semi-final.

"I was brought up coaching U18s and U23s, Liverpool played really well tonight but they'll be disappointed with the result. They've got some starlets that will be performing at Premier League level in the next three or four years."

Actually this match for the youth is really a win win situation. Lose as expected they will gain experience and be noticed if they play well and having a great time. Win (not that it happened) and they will be having the most memorable time of their life.

Elliott needs to be part of the senior team more often. He is too good for the rest out there tonight. He will learn nothing more playing alongside this lot.
Yeah Elliot is to good agreed, either get him gauranteed starts on loan or bring him into the first team and give him since appearances when things are good. From the little I've seen I think we could afford to let Shaq go at the end of the season and have him replace him.
