for the record I'd definately have young over silva.
I wouldn't. I saw Young play against chelsea at stamford bridge and one thing that struck me was that when it came against really good opposition he lacked that certain degree of footballing magic to conjure up somethign special - he very much relied upon service, and when he got the ball he didin;t seem to either have a outstanding pace, dribbling skills or passing skills. I say outstanding becuase I want us to be aiming for the best out there and the one area where I think Silva is outstanding is hia ability to beat one player and deliver a deadly pass. Young is not even a England regular.

I'd prefer Silva, but would still be happy if Ashley Young was our only other (apart from Johnson) signing this summer. The Barry saga puts me off the idea of buying from Aston Villa, but maybe we could wait in the wings for Chelsea to make an acceptable offer, then match it and let the player decide. He'd get more games with us, that's for sure.
I think anyone choosing Chelsea over us would be more or less going for the money. I know they're an attractive proposition, but we're both pretty much at the same level with us having more stability at managerial level and offering more guarantees (for someone like Young) of first team football.

Who wouldn't want to play in a side that has Torres and Gerrard? Baffling.
a little bias there marky? chelsea have good players too, who wouldn't want to play alonside a monster like essien or feed nico?
Yeah fair enough, we've got a group of young players there though in Agger, skrtel, Insua etc who are great for the future of the club, and it's pretty obvious on last years evidence that were as close as we've been for a longtime. Chelsea are close too, but the amount of managers coming and going in recent years suggests they're a bit of a rocky boat, despite the excellent squad.

you're preaching to the choir I just think in chelsea's case now after half a billion invested in the team it's more than just money. they will almost certainly be in the latter stages of the CL and will definately challenge for the league, they have fantastic (albeit cheating) players and they are in the capital.

I don't think MON would let young leave for less than 20, he wanted 18 (I think) for barry and barry only had a year left on his contract.
Probably fairer to say youngs career at Watford was at the same stage the same as Barnes at Watford.

Bent at £7mill and Richards at £5mill would be bargains, I'd be over the moon if we pulled both of those off.

I've said about Bent for a while now, he's a bargain waiting to happen, he's the right man at the wrong club.

Who mentioned Bent for £7m? He'd cost more than that, surely. Are you getting him mixed up with David Bentley?

went wouldn't come here, he knows full well he'd be a bit part player.

And I doubt Robbie Keane has a dossier of temping info to pass on

I would like him here though - he'd be perfect.

I think you'll find he is - being a regualr for your country is a very good indication of how good you are and highy rated you are. Nothing to do with cheese.

He hasn't started many (maybe 2 max 3) of Del Bosque's 13 games in charge. Hence, he isn't a 'regular'.

Oh yeah, it was Bentley, my mistake.

He can sod off, even for £7million.

Bent, I want Bent.

I read somewhere that Sunderland were going to offer £12m for him. I agree he'd be a good back-up to Torres, but can we afford him at that kind of price? And would he want to come here and sit on the bench?
Don't think it's that simple, neil.  He'd be coming to a club which is likely to play a shedload of games, whose manager likes to rotate his players and whose star striker has had on-and-off injury niggles.  Yes, he'd be second choice, but he's hardly even that at Tottenham, he'd get more games at LFC and he'd be at a club which can expect to win things.

I wouldn't pay double figure millions for him though.  £9 mill.tops.

He could be used to play in the Kuyt and Reira role too.

I'd happily pay £12million for him.

Bent's main credentials are he scores goals and has excelled in the lone striker position in a very average side.

Ideal back-up, but I don't believe we can guarantee him games - that's the problem.

What have you seen to suggest Darren Bent can be effective on the flanks?

He's pacy, good movement off the ball, can run at defenders; I think he could be effective playing wide. It's an option.

He's definitely quick, and probably could do a job out wide as an occasional stand-in, but I hope we don't go back to the days of signing players in one position and then trying to squeeze them into another.

I agree with the second part of your post JJ, I just think it's a way to keep a player, who's primarily brought for cover, happy and involved in the team.
