Arthur Melo

I'm trying to find his injury history and can't for some reason, because I noticed he plays so few games or minutes. I've read he has been out quite frequently for Barca and had a 3 month lay off at Juve.
@King Binny if you could help please or anyone

Lots of injuries...

Remember him at Barca - was a very solid midfielder, but nothing special.
Faster Lucas?

Ha, I came into the thread to make the Lucas comparison!

The Pjanic swap deal was bonkers - though remember Beamrider explained the rationale behind it - but was never impressed by him at Barca.

He looks (in the highlights) as exactly what he's been bought for - a backup to Hendo/Thiago. He's never a DM - at 1.72m and 70 kgs, and without a high tackling success rate, he is in no way a backup for Fabs.

Overall he looks fine for what he is supposed to be, a warm body in midfield as cover until our real targets are available. I know nothing of whether Luiz would be better or not (or maybe we're after both).

It's a bizarre signing though in that it doesn't provide any answers to the long-term future of our midfield.

We now have 9 midfielders, with 4 of them having 1 year left. I'm assuming Ox, Milner are certain to leave, and I suspect that the new deal for Keita will not materialise. Now Arthur might give us some short term relief, but do we actually buy him next year if he plays well? He'll be 27 next year and isn't exactly an impressive physical specimen.

This does very little to alleviate the pressure on us in future transfer windows. Just a short term fix that'll help us the way Kabak did briefly.
At this stage one has to assume that we the fans and the media know nothing of what the club has planned/committed for next Summer. Just going to have to trust that they have it all in hand.

Who the fuck is suggesting him? We are getting a player who isn't match fit, could play one game and most likely be out till Jan at the earliest, why???? Why the fuck not go for Michael Sabitzer, he is available on loan?

The problem with Arthur

Arthur’s high pass completion numbers, though, were in large part because of the types of passes he was playing. Too often he played the ball sideways or backwards. He kept possession, yes. But, he didn’t take many risks at all.
So we've loaned a younger Gini then. That'll please some!

Neil Jones saying we tried for Laimer but failed, and then pivoted to Arthur. No mention of Luiz

Do we not have 20 million to even get Douglas Luiz? I think Arthur is a DLP like Thiago, but not as good obviously. I think he's kinda slow and unathletic. He'd help us inasmuch as we're desperate for bodies in midfield, but seems a bit uninspiring. We desperately need some athleticism in that midfield.

Actual slow or 6CM slow?

The Juve fans describe him as a Thiago lite, too fragile for the rigours of Serie A. Well at least I was wrong about us only signing athletes

AFC not in the CL, being scrutinised by FFP , spent nearly £300m over 2 seasons are trying to get Luiz, whilst we are going for a player on high wages, rarely plays and is master at passing sideways and backways. I'd rather wait till Jan now, Ward looks to be a Simp of Gordan, going for basic signngs

From the 'right' player to the player right at the last minute.

Bit ridiculous to be scrambling around like this... again.

He's a warm body type signing, ain't he.

Having said that, it's a big step up in class from a Kabak-type.

If we get someone else with him (Luiz?) and if this somewhat guarantees Bellingham next summer, I'll be "OK" with it.

He is exactly that, another midfielder to boost numbers and at this stage probably the best we can expect as long as he is fit.

What do you mean by solid? He's had 15 separate injury absences in 3 seasons of European football

he was a solid midfield cog in barca's machine - when they were still good enough.
Think he had one serious injury there but most of the others were a week here or there.

We need a warm body on the pitch not to keep Naby, Ox, Thiago and CJ company. I can see it before Jan if we have Melo. Fabs, Thiago, Ox, Naby, CJ and Melo all out. This is real possbility

Fuck sake.. going from a £25m fully fit, prem proven, hardly ever injured Douglas Luiz.

To a bargain basement loan deal, unproven, injury prone Arthur

Really sums up where we are right now.

He's just on a loan. Indeed as a few posters have said, a warm body, which is better than none. We are threadbare as it is. He seems to have good pedigree, he's mates with Neymar and he looks a little like Adrian.

What could go wrong?
