Are we now a totally soulless club?

The romantic version of LFC is dead and buried for me. There's nothing interesting, remarkable or different about the club now.

We're simply another Premier League Franchise trying to succeed. Commercialisation has changed the game so much now that it's not about what it used to be about. The struggles if a group of men playing in red that you could somehow identify with has been replaced with the preening and moaning of a bunch of halfwit millionaires who I can't stand.

The owners, the manager, the players - there's nothing about them that reminds of the Liverpool way.

LFC fell off the top rung of the ladder and have been in a rut for nearly 2 decades because we never evolved with the times and modernised. It cost us in a big way and we haven't quite recovered. There's a long way to go yet. We sold out to commercialism because the previous owners failed to move the club into the 21st century. We lost our soul and our way when we sold out to H&G. Unfortunate as it is, it was a necessary evil.

We're still a romantic club with a massive history and there's more to come provided we get it exactly right.

the thing is as far as I can see players come AND go. Staff and Directors definitely come and go. So what is the soul of the club? It is quite patently, the fans.

As long as maintain our dignity, and don't take any great dictators or oligarchs as our overlords, we'll always have soul. We were always about winning - if we have to commercialize to achieve that, so be it. There's no danger of a Chelsea appearing in Liverpool.

Ian Ayre can talk about products, that's his job. But it's not like we're going to switch "products" anytime soon. For us, it's a loyalty almost stronger than anything else.

To suggest the club is to soulless, is to suggest we are soulless. And we're CLEARLY not. Why else would we be on these boards, talking with people we've sometimes never met, supporting our club through thick and thin.

ERGO LFC GOT SOUL!

Thats pretty much how I sum up things.. we rested on our laurels and tradition for far too long... As a club we did not evolve

Unfortunately that is the way of the world now, it is all about brand and money and power and influence. I, like many others, have fallen out of love with the game and have been like this for nearly 3 or 4 years. Is it because we are shite, is it becuase I am older and spend more time worrying about my children, is it because SKY has ruined the game? It is probably a combination of all these things.

I think the major disillusionment comes fro mthe fact it is non stop, we get fed bollocks 24/7 about our clubs, we lose the mystery of them, the aura has been shattered because of the invasion of Sky. This is the price that had to be paid to get the money in, is it worth it - not a fucking chance. Unfortuantely my boy will not have the same opportunities I did, he will never stand on the Kop or be able to decide on the morning of the game to go the match.

It is all about how many fans, twittter, facegimp follows you can get and how much owners can dupe fans for....

Fuck it, it's shite but having said all that you can't help loving your club - maybe not as you once did but you love them all the same.

you're a bunch of fannys, im a football fan first and a liverpool fan second, i dont watch football out of some blind love for liverpool i do it because i like watching football and liverpool are the team i chose, my whole family are liverpool supporters but i dont give a fuck, before i was into football when i was a kid i said i was an evertonian cause my best mate was

if you want romance in football go and join rawk and wank into poetry socks

What I've never understood is not how money came to dominate English football, but how it took so long to do it. It seems from my general knowledge that the Italian and Spanish leagues were awash with money long before the PL started. When Maradona signed for Napoli for nearly £7m I think the record British transfer was £1.5m. Didn't Cruyff earn around £1m a year at Barcelona? Weren't players being attracted to Italy's higher wages as far back as the 1950s? John Charles comes to mind.

So can anyone older or just better informed than me explain all that? What was special about England that kept the game here relatively provincial?

We all need some of what Colin Pascoe is having. He's always happy.

Hey, Colin, we're getting thrashed here!

I love gettin' thrashed, me, it makes the next win all the sweeter, like!

Colin, the universe is expanding!

Good! Makes more room, doesn't it? I hate feeling cramped, me!

Col, I've studied the utilitarian position, the deontolgical position, the value pluralist position, everything, and I just cannot see a way of getting through life without getting our hands dirty.

No worries, the missus buys these massive containers of soap from Lidl. Even if they don't help I think I've got a pot of Swarfega in the garage!

Chrissakes, Colin, we're doomed!
It's nearly dinner time, man! Get a grip!!

Mate, has he ever said or done anything that has harmed the club in any way? No.
Does the players like him? Looks like it.

I dont get the hate tbh

I also love football more than I love Liverpool. Just like I love music more than my favorite musician.

Liverpool becomes a soulless club the day it's fan base become cynical soulless fuckers who see nothing positive or reap any enjoyment from supporting the club. So, based on the input from posters on this forum, yeah we're about 70% of the way there. I've never felt anything overly romantic in supporting the club but always did feel the club and it's fan base held a strong set of values but I don't think we were alone in that. Those values do seemed to have disappeared somewhat over the years from a combination of sly ownership and the ways our fans now behave. I mean, if you're seen to blindly support a club that's no longer winning you have certain parts of the support making out like you're some kind of retard. On the other hand, if you've become overly critical of the club others will make out you're not a proper supporter. It all feels a little broken at times.

I've reconciled myself recently with the way things are, a kind of epiphany. I enjoy watching footy and especially Liverpool - it's always been Liverpool first, football second for me and for that I make no excuses or arguments it simply is the way it is. It gives me an interest, one of the things to break up the humdrum of daily life. It's allows me to catch up with my mates on a regular basis, chew the fat with them and sink a few jars. It's allowed me to make lots of new friends from all over the world whether virtual relationships or people I've been fortunate enough to meet in person. It's allowed me to develop a camaraderie with lots of people with a common foundation interest and those communities I participate in have made me smile many times over the years. These are the reasons I love Liverpool, not because some overly nostalgic bellend tells me we're the greatest club on earth because of our history - which, by the way, we should still remain proud of.

Liverpool has in some ways become a soulless club but the main reason is that football has in many ways become a soulless game. We've simply aligned and our values have held us back in that regard - you do or die nowadays. That's the way footy is now. Accept it or don't but moaning about it is relatively pointless and if you get caught up too much in the good old days I guess you start to sound like a Hovis advert

Back on topic. I think sadly its invitable that clubs move in the direction we're headed in.
Tv deals, marketing, fanbase - its all about the money. The best example is that in the league there is almost more focus on 4th and Champions league football than winning it. Its seen as a success if you get to the CL, and the money being thrown around takes a lot of the old values about football out of the game.
After the introduction of Abramovitch and Mansour at City the joy and soul of football took a hit. It was suddenly possible to buy yourself a title.

We have to do everything in our power to make money now so that we can try to mount a challenge. I hope we can still keep alive a lot of the traditions that make our club great, and I think we have to some degree.

Unless you support a lower league club this is the way it will be, but I think its more important to try and remember that its just a game. 11 vs 11 and you like the red team from Liverpool. It doesnt have to be complicated. I've been a Liverpool fan for 28 years and there will never be another team I support.
The amount of time you spend on games and support varies on where you are in life aswell I think.
We should adapt the fans owned system the Bundesliga have, but its probably to late.

Top professional football level has become a money-driven soulless sport.
Our club is just part of the puzzle, not very different from others.

This thread isn't about how shit we are.

But it's been a long time since anyone took any notice of what threads were about before they posted in them, so don't worry about it.
Ok then, it's about how shit and depressing the athmosphere surrounding LFC is.

Nail on head interface there.

The fact of the matter is that the Premier League is a league for soulless clubs. It became that when it changed from being called the First Division, and when Sky bought in wiping the memory card for everything that went before.

But what do we as Liverpool fans do. Start supporting AFC Liverpool? Start wear blue and white scarves to matches and calling for the American owners to fuck off?

I dont know to be honest. I just know that I still want Liverpool F C to win every game they play in even if they do represent me with a bunch of overpaid prima donnas.

This thread is just a function of the current lack of success, if we were winning, this thread would probably not exist.

Not to say there is no validity to it, just winning makes you forgive and forget other transgressions.

I'd like to know how all you older fans slept at night getting your entertainment on the cheap and forcing your footballing heroes to spend their retirements pulling pints and serving unpleasant pub food?

Lots of Nytol and brandy, served by Alec Lindsay.

Pascoe Ayesteran is the link between Rodgers and the players. Rodgers is quite distant and doesn't get involved or interact with the players very much so Pascoe is there to do all the rimming, fellating, prostate massaging and tea-bagging that Rodgers is too remote and distant to do.
