Are we happy?

Milner and Clyne are solid signings. Hard to find a negative.

Firmino, I know nothing about him to be honest. Hard to assess but I just hope he doesn't have the career arc that most Brazilian AMs have.

I like Benteke but the price we paid was way too much.

Last season, the reason we didn't get top 4 was we didn't score enough goals. This summer we've brought in Benteke, Ings, Firmino, and Milner to score goals from the off. So for me, we're heading in the right direction, and have made a significant improvement over last season.
I'm confident that between Benteke, Ings, sicknote, Firmino, Milner, Coutinho, Lallana, Lazar, Henderson, Skrtel - we are defo good for ~80 goals, and 80 goals gets you top 4.
Only 24 goals against the bottom 10 teams in 20 games last season. We've done well to buy some goals IMO.

A summer of correcting the balls up of last summer. Replacing players he bought a year ago. Fuck knows if any will work out, or if enough of them will for it to work. A new £60 million strikeforce ought to be decent shouldn't it?

I'm actually quite happy overall. I think it could go either way with Benteke but at least Rodgers fate rests on that seemingly.

We've (mis)spent a lot of money again and whereas in the past we always found another player that went on to replace or eclipse the departing star player, this time I'm not so sure we've managed it.

Have we mis-spent it? Or are you not sure? It seems you're saying one thing and then something completely different. I'm not trying to be an arse, just interested in what you mean.

I don't think we've bought a magical forward in Benteke, but a reliable one, like Sturridge (when fit, obv). The crux will be whether Firmino or Coutinho (or both) become the catalyst(s) that make everything click.

I don't think it's fair to say that Milner and Clyne are money mis-spent. They're both very good players.

It's a mix. Overall I'm not happy because I expect both Firmino and Benteke to be at best qualified successes.

I don't disagree with this. And so my unhappiness lies in the fact that, although I think we have made some good overall improvements, we've got to bed them in, which will take time, and that may be too much of a factor for us to challenge seriously for top 4. But I've been pessimistic ever since we blew our opportunity last year and compounded it by not finding anybody to fill the gap left by Suarez.

I'm happy because because we have a squad good enough to challenge for the title. If we don't finish in the top 3 and within 6 or 7 points of top then the manager should be replaced. For the record I think we will finish 3rd or 4th but wouldn't be hugely surprised if we actually finished top.

Mental.

We've made quite a few decent signings but it feels like we're back at square 1. I can't see us starting the season flying but we have a stronger team than last season, so hopefully we can settle down quickly and show some progress.

Considering some of the shit we've bought in the past, yeh i would say I'm guardedly optimistic. I had visions of the Sterling money being totally wasted. With the exception of the Benteke fee, I'd say it's been a pretty decent window. A LB and DM would be nice though.

It's as much as we could hope for. I can't see how we could have done much better. I need Balo to leave before I start believing. He is a disruptive force regardless of his intentions.

I think that camolli dude is full of Shite. We are building and clearly it's necessary to clean up.

If Balo stays Rodgers will lose the dressing room again.

Why is balotelli the reason Rodgers loses the dressing room?

Rodgers will lose the dressing room if he freezes out players, plays people in unfamiliar positions, and is stubborn to the point of lunacy

None of that will be balotellis fault

Fair questions.

The suggestion that we have misspent the money was more with a question mark than a statement.

I've suggested Milner and Firmino (albeit largely based on reputation), for example, as signings in the past. Milner a few years ago and Firmino last season when I thought he'd be cheaper. So it's not that I think the players we've bought are all awful but I have three issues:

1) I watch a lot less football than I used to and therefore with some of these guys I'm having to trust other peoples judgement with my hopes and that didn't work out too well for me last season (see: Lovren). That coupled with the fact that we often seem to fuck things up whenever we have a hole burning in our pocket makes me concerned.

2) I feel like we're still missing that player that will make us click.

3) I'm struggling to see the grand plan.

The last two are the main issues. We bought a load of players last season and it was all a bit of a jumbled mess. What was the point of Balotelli? Why buy Lambert and treat him as we did? Is there any kind of development plan for Markovic? Is Sakho Rodgers man or not and what's the deal with Lovren? How is Can going to fit in? And so on.

Now we've bought another boat load of players and they come with their own set of questions.

The whole idea of being tactically flexible, fluid or whatever is great but we need to put a core system in place that provides continuity so that everyone knows what the score is and we can develop it, plan and buy for it.

Maybe we have that in place already and I've failed to appreciate it, I don't know. I might be completely wrong but it feels like we're stockpiling options / potential with the hope of figuring it out later and / or hitting jackpot with a couple of them. That doesn't inspire confidence.

My thoughts and concerns, too. Top post.

Another concern is that just like last summer we've blown our load again and perhaps not done all we can to get as much value for money as possible. In some ways that's good but in others it's evidence of that scatter gun "let's see what sticks" approach I mentioned above... as well as the persistence with the often flawed premium for Prem proven talent (hard not to be cynical).

How much money is there going to be in the future with no big sale to offset the expenditure? It's a concern. Particularly if a couple of these big money signings don't work out.
