Re: Rumours that we are back in for Villa...

I made this up in work yesterday afternoon (sell Alonso, move Stevie into midfield, etc) and it's in the papers today.

Either:

a) someone was spying on me
b) a journalist was similarly bored and made up the same thing as me.

I will have a sex wee x3 if we sign him... tellin thee...

From the Telegraph.. nothing conclusive though.. purely speculative

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez is expected to make a move for Valencia's David Villa once Xabi Alonso's £30 million move to Real Madrid has gone through.

With Alonso guaranteed to leave this summer having submitted a transfer request earlier this week following months of speculation, Benitez and his scouting team have been on the look out for a suitable replacement.

According to the S**, Alonso is expected to complete his deal with Real within the next 24 hours giving Benitez enough disposable cash to pair Villa up with his compatriot Fernando Torres.

Liverpool are said to be confident of their chances of snapping up the 26-year-old, who has already turned down offers from Real and Barcelona this summer, but have prepared a back up plan should they encounter any obstacles.

If signing Villa evades the club, Roma midfielder Alberto Aquilani, 24 is also on Benitez's radar.

While he would not come cheap - Roma rate their home-grown star at £30m - there are signs that his club would not stand in the way of a transfer to Liverpool.

Roma's financial situation puts them in a position where they are unable to object to big money transfers, which plays into the hands of Benitez.

There is currently an ownership row surrounding the club, after the agent Vinicio Fioranelli, representing a Swiss corporation saw his takeover bid collapse.

Tabloids are running with it, so it's nothing.

Didn't slur say something like they wanted 45 for Villa and 55 for Aguero? He's out of our budget even if we do flog chabbi.

We need to start an outrageous rumour on here and run with it until it get's in the papers. Some Stockport County fans had Ravanelli becoming their manager with Graeme Souness as assistant, then some journo printed it!

You said yesterday that we had loads of money. The Echo story today flatly contradicts that though. Even with all our potential sales added together, we won't be able to scrape together £40m.

Although I would love it to be true.

Just to put things into perspective, one rag says Aquilani is availeble for 15 m, and now here he's linked with a move for 30m!

I doubt Rafa would spunk everything on a striker, when we have a gaping hole in midfield.

Unless he's planning to fill that gap by dropping Stevie back into it....

and/or giving spearing more games... plausible..

actually the more I think about it, it is totally plausible.. We might just not replace Alonso and use what we already have.
Resulting in seeing a lot more of Gerrard back in midfield, with Lucas & Spearing seeing more games this season.

we are keeping Voronin by the looks of things...

so combo up front... 442 Mascherano/Lucas & Gerrard in Midfield

Villa/Torres
Voronin/Torres
Voronin/Villa

451/433/4231 - Lucas/Spearing & Mascherano in Midfield
Gerrard/Villa
Gerrard/Torres

So it would give us options..

Villa would be an amazing signing, and is the only available player I'd revert to a 4-4-2 for.

I'd be very surprised, though. Although Lawenson alluded to buying Villa in his latest article - clutching at straws but maybe he knows something.

As exciting as the thought of Villa is, it would be criminal for us to spend the Xabi money on a striker without replacing him in CM.

It's equally "criminal" in my opinion to start a season with one decent striker.

There's not much in it.

I agree that we're short on attacking options too, but if we've got a limited budget we need to split it between a CM and forward player. Not blow it all on a forward.

I think there is. If we stick with the 4-2-3-1, we have a lot more options for the striker position than we do for the midfield. They may not be great... but after Lucas and Masher, we're having to look at completely unproven reservists, which is far worse in my eyes than starting Kuyt or Voronin up front.

And without being sensationalist or part of any crusade against a player, Lucas simply isn't good enough to be our first choice.

While I agree we could do with both, I think we've been far too guilty of this approach in the past. I'd sooner we signed one world class player than take a punt on two players who may or may not be good enough.

I definately don't want to break up the gerrard/torris combo but if you ARE going to break it up you may as well with villa, they don't come much better than him.

In that case, we need to spend the money on a top midfielder then.

Say we do buy Villa and Gerrard is injured for 3-4 weeks. That leaves us with a midfield of Lucas and Masher. Then if one of them picks up a knock? What do we do? Back to Aurelio in midfield? Plessis? Spearing?

We'd be taking a massive risk going into the season with only two decent midfielders and Lucas.

That's the crux of it. Some players are worth pushing the boat out for. Villa is one of those players. Aguero would be another.

If Villa was a viable option, I think we'd have to try and pick up a bargain/prospect to cover midfield. He's a match winner, and we need more of them.

So let's spend all the money on a top midfielder.

... and Gerrard is injured for 3-4 weeks. That leaves us with strikers of Torres and Voronin. Then if one of them picks up a knock? What do we do? Back to Ngog up front? Nemeth? Peacheo?

I disagree.......

Its harder to buy goals than it is someone who can pass and defend in midfield.

If we sold Xabi and bought Villa it would be a massive upgrade to our team.

If we look at the Scum we think they have been weakened, why? because they have lost goal scoring threat... That is worth more than anything in todays game.

If we could get Villa and Torres with Gerrard in behind just imagine the aura that would give to our team.

I dont buy into this Villa and Torres cant play together bullshit either, everytime Ive seen them play together they have looked awesome.

I've long thought about aurelio in midfield, I think his range of passing is excellent and he obviously is capable of the defensive side, it's a pity the guy is almost permantly injuried.

The same could be said about Torres getting injured again.......

We have better depth in midfield at present than we do in attack thats for sure.
