Yeah. It doesn't really make sense to me. Partly because I don't know what the model is as far as Brendan is concerned. For Benitez, he was apeing Sacchi. I understood at least what he was trying. But with Rodgers? Is it Barcelona? He wants a midfield three with one pivot and two ahead of that pivot, one of whom is a 'Number 10'. Barcelona have done that, with Busquets as the pivot, but Busquets isn't really a deep-lying playmaker in the way Alonso has been for Madrid/Bayern. Lucas is the closest midfielder we have in style to Busquets, and Rodgers spent ages trying to shoehorn Gerrard there. The problem is that someone like Alonso as the deepest midfielder works when you have attackers that press and midfielders that win the ball higher up the pitch. And yet Rodgers was continuing with Gerrard as the deepest when we lost that pressing. So I get the impression he doesn't quite understand, beyond anything conceptual, how a midfield actually works in connection with the rest of the team.
