Carlo Ancelotti is unlikely to end his sabbatical to replace Brendan Rodgers as Liverpool manager, sources have told ESPN FC.

Ancelotti is among the front runners to succeed Rodgers after the Northern Irishman was sacked on Sunday. Rodgers, who was in charge for just over three seasons at Anfield, was axed just hours after Liverpool's 1-1 draw with Everton in the Merseyside derby. Liverpool are now searching for a new manager and are hopeful of bringing in a new man before their next game against Tottenham Hotspur on Oct. 17 after the international break.

Former Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp and ex-Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti are Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group's top targets to replace Rodgers, but sources have told ESPN FC they face a battle to convince Ancelotti to take the vacant post. Ancelotti is currently on a year-long sabbatical after leaving Real Madrid at the end of last season and sources have told ESPN FC that Liverpool have sounded out the 56-year-old to gauge his interest in taking charge of Liverpool.

Ancelotti is not totally ruling himself out of the running, but the Italian would prefer to takeover a club competing in the Champions League. That means Jurgen Klopp is the hot favourite to return to management with Liverpool just five months after leaving Borussia Dortmund. However, last month Klopp's agent, Marc Kosicke, said the coach "has not talked to other clubs" at that stage and, asked about a possible return date, added: "I think it will be the new season." Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc believes Klopp could become the next Bayern Munich boss, telling Sport Bild: "It's factually conceivable." Mexico Football Federation general secretary Guillermo Cantu also revealed last week that Klopp turned down the chance to manage their national team.

I always felt that if he was interested we'd have given him the job before now

I said this weeks ago. Look at the clubs he has managed.

Always top sides, top infrastructure and european football. Why risk that track record for a club that is clearly a few big changes / decisions away from getting it right?

There's a possibility I think that the Roma job might become available sooner rather than later and that would probably be a more attractive proposition for him

He knows the Chelsea job will be available by the end of the season for about 3 times the wages we pay

Rest easy, it won't be Eddie Howe.
Probably Garry Monk.
😱

Both of those names belong in an ITV Sunday night sitcom. Come on Red Astaire, slum it for a bit and write one!

Oi, Eddie, if you advocate that diamond formation one more time I'll smash your face in!

Geddoff! I fink you'll find that I'll be deploying a fluid Ajax-style 3-3-3-1 system - cos it impresses the birds!

I 'ate you, Klopp!

I presume we already have our new manager and we are just waiting to announce it. We wouldn't have sacked Rodgers yet if we didn't.

He's approaching his last job. He can go the 'comfy slippers' route of a top job in a holiday resort or he could decide to take on the challenge of his life.

I don't think he'd stay around too long

Might depend on how well things went, but certainly that's the indication in the papers today. He's said to have been interested but on a 1 or 2-year basis, which in turn put FSG off (though they're reported to have offered Klopp a 3-year deal, which isn't a whole lot longer).

What's wrong with 1 or 2 years? Put Gerrard or Carra as assistant manager in the meantime. If it works out just get them to replicate when he leaves. If it doesn't we can sack him on the cheap.

We need a dynasty, not a short term fix. Klopp on 3 years gives us flexibility, if he doesn't cut it, but allows for renewal when it is clear the dynasty is emerging; taking Ancelotti on a 1-2 year deal seems to have no option of renewal, so he may have started making progress after 2 years & we are back to square 1 with an unknown quantity again

We don't know that. If it *is* true, I agree it's a significant factor and one which FSG were entitled to baulk at.

We know nothing, is right. But he is knocking on a bit so its not unlikely. We can have the Kloppmeister for 20+ years

I wouldn't rule anyone out by the length of time they are planning to be here now. Most of our managers should have only lasted two to three years anyway.

If we end up with a successful manager after two years, then I'd be happy enough whether they stay or go, we'd be in a better position to get another manager anyway.

Personally I agree with that, but despite my preference for Ancelotti I couldn't honestly call FSG unreasonable for taking a different view.
