"Barry O'Connor (PhD)"
Hahahahahahahaha!

Of course it could have been that which led to the reply
"Yeah this guy's got a PhD, that can go into the reply pile. What's this next one? MA? Fuck off"

I've only used the letters after my name perhaps half a dozen times in well over thirty years, but one of them was when I wrote to the club to question the proposal to install seating on the Kop. What followed may or may not have had anything to do with the way I signed my letter off, but the chairman at the time (Sir John Smith) telephoned me a few days later to explain the decision. We actually had quite a long chat and the matter of my degree subject came up. After I told Sir John that the degree was in French and German, we ended up agreeing that I'd write in German to the then Secretary-General of UEFA as a Liverpool fan asking them to let us back into Europe (other English clubs had got back in but we were still banned). Our ban had been due to last for the rest of that season and the one after, but in the event UEFA relented and readmitted us to European competition that summer. Obv.I'll never know if my letter played any real part in that, but I like to hope it might have done.

Good on yer Dr JJ, good to know mate.

Kind of you to say so, but I'm not actually a PhD. MA (Cantab) seems to have done the trick though.

Aiyayaya, MA (Cantab) as good as a PhD in my mind as PhDs are so common nowadays, a dime a dozen with degree mills all over the place. "😉
