I got told some interesting info about exactly why he left, so i thought i'd share it.

A couple of years ago, he went after some Scouse bird, whilst his wife was in Spain. She found out, and told him to come back to Spain permanently or she'd fuck him off.

He told Rafa, and Rafa tried to sell him, summer of 2008. It failed, and Alonso told his wife it was Rafa's fault he hadn't left, and she believed him, but gave him an ultimatum of one year, which Benitez agreed to, and knew for ages, just couldn't get the price he wanted.

Probably mostly bollocks but i thought i'd pass it on.

When I was in Liverpool 2 years ago I heard Alonso had a habit of playing away. Don't know if its true but I did see pictures of him and Morientes at a messy house party.

I'd believe the premise about Alonso being a naughty boy and his wife finding out, but I have doubts about Rafa facilitating the move back to Spain based purely on that alone. He is far too clinical for that.

I'm not sure I'd characterise his efforts as "facilitating", at least not this summer. I'd say he tried playing hardball until he got his price, then fucked up with finding a replacement who would help this season.

I do find the story reasonably plausible though. Allegedly.
