FK Rabotnicki v Liverpool: Roy Hodgson in dismay as rebuilding work hits a snag
After just 28 days, Roy Hodgson’s honeymoon at Liverpool seems to be over.

Despite a period of positivity at Anfield – securing the arrival of Joe Cole, the faith of Steven Gerrard and, apparently, Fernando Torres – the storm clouds returned on Wednesday.

When he should have been eagerly anticipating his first competitive game in the biggest job of his career, he had the air of a man on his way to the gallows.

When he might have chosen to bask in the afterglow of those victories in the early skirmishes of his Anfield tenure, he seemed irascible. When he had previously been open and honest, he was cagey, even confrontational.

Perhaps it was naive to believe that Hodgson’s arrival would do any more than provide temporary relief from the troubles that have ailed Liverpool for so long.

Certainly, the complaints which seemed to weigh so heavily on the 62 year-old’s shoulders will be eerily familiar to any observer of the antics at Anfield over the past few seasons.

It is, in Hodgson’s defence, not hard to understand his anxiety. Liverpool will start their season under-resourced and underprepared, the manager believes. Many of their senior players are absent.

Their ability to ready themselves for Thursday night's Europa League third qualifying round tie against FK Rabotnicki in Macedonia has been undermined by the lack of time between the draw, made last week, and the match itself.

Surprising as it is to hear a Liverpool manager play down his side’s chances against a team of such limited reputation, Hodgson admits he is “far from certain†his ersatz team can emerge unscathed from what should, on paper, be a mismatch.

That he is unimpressed at the prospect of facing unknown opponents in an unfinished stadium with an unfinished team is evident.

“I could not have envisaged at the start of my time at Liverpool a more difficult situation than the one I find myself in,†he said. “It would have been nice if the game was played later and we could field what we think is our strongest team, but we cannot. It would have been complete folly to try to play 90 minutes of football in an important competition in difficult conditions with players who have been training for just four days.

“In World Cup years it is a tremendous burden on the senior teams from countries like England, Spain, Italy and Germany to have to play the third qualifying round matches on July 29. Everybody, most of all Uefa, knows you cannot bring people off the beach, give them three days training and throw them into a first-class game. We have had no choice but to do that.

“We know the value of this competition and with 13 players returning from the World Cup and most not here, this is not the Liverpool team you will see most of the season. We have learned as much about Rabotnicki as we have been able to learn in a week, and we will be trying to win, but I am far from confident that will be the case.â€

Such concerns, though, do not quite explain the sea-change in Hodgson’s mood. Questions over his preferred formation and how heavily the need to infuse Liverpool’s squad with English players to meet new Premier League regulations were affecting his thinking were given short shrift.

He refused to discuss the £2.5 million bid Liverpool have had accepted by Aston Villa for full-back Luke Young or the future of Maxi Rodriguez, the Argentina international who impressed in his first six months at Anfield but has, reportedly, been informed he would be allowed to leave should a suitable offer be received.

Perhaps a clue as to the root cause of his mounting frustration lay in his offhand reaction to an inquiry about what, if any, discussions had been held with Liverpool’s hierarchy over the place the Europa League held in the club’s list of priorities. “All we ever seem to do at Liverpool is have discussions,†he said. “So I am pretty sure those discussions have taken place.â€

So much for the brave new world supposedly heralded by Hodgson’s arrival. Those words could have been taken from Rafael Benítez’s book of cryptic comments made during his six years at the club.

All talk, no action. Maybe Hodgson has simply needed a few weeks to realise that, at Anfield, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

I can understand Roy's frustration, do the board talk more than act?

Back in his FC Copenhagen-days Roy was commented upon as a very nice bloke, a good manager albeit a very stubborn one too who wasn't the easiest to satisfy and work along seen from a club directors point of view.

Actually he was deemed to be 'very difficult and demanding' in his quest for the best.

I posted these comments about him a month ago or so on here when the deal was first revealed as I hoped for him to be the man to make things happen behind curtains because of his attitude and apparent willingness to put his foot down.

I'd still love for this to be the case but it's obvious he's already groing increasingly frustrated with the lack of back-up and leadership throughout.

What a load of bollocks.

It's a shit time to play because of the World Cup, so he's not happy. What else do people want him to say? He's said in other interviews from yesterday that it's a chance for other players to step up to the plate. So what if he says this isn't the team that will play most of the season? Everyone knows it, unless they envisage us unearthing enough players from the reserves that can miraculously keep the likes of Torres and Gerrard out the team.

Get real FFS.

Regards any frustrations with the board/owners, people expected him to be a yes man, and now people are questioning him for showing a bit of balls.

It's a bit of a non-story really with regards to the rested players and youngsters involved.

Actually I reckon the likes of Amoo and Spearing will be pleased to learn they are not the ones relied upon to bring home no 19 in the coming Season.

Yeah, it's not like it's a kick in the teeth, in the main interview he said that it was a chance for other players to show what they can do. It's just selective journalism. Everyone knows we've got a load of International away still. He's got a fine line to tread. He's got players who were ready to walk on the club and he's got lads hoping to prove their worth, and he's got to keep both happy. He's being honest and as per people are still ready to have a moan and jump on his back.

How can he win?

If only we hadn't started with El Zhar upfront in the last game against Hull, and played our best eleven and won.
Then this qual round would have been given to someone else, ah well..

Agreed Mark. He just can't win.

It's just a very sly and negative take on an interview that has elsewhere been praised for its honesty.

As for the comments about the kids, keni, I presume he's doing this to take the pressure off them - and that what he says to them in the dressing room is a lot more inspirational and encouraging.

Any way you look at it, Hodgson has been thrown in the deep end. In his first week or so, he sounded to me like he was drowning. Now he sounds like grimly swimming to the side. He's swimming to survive right now; swimming with style can wait till he's got his breath back.
(Anyone want to extend this metaphor for me?)

yes. whilst you admire hodgson's swimming ability there are other managers in the league on their jet-ski's dissapearing over the horizon

I think 'treading water' would've worked better than 'swimming to the side', but otherwise, very good. 😉

It seems like the Liverpool manager is a poisoned chalice to the media. You just can't win!

That's not possible. I've never liked people who ask things which can't be done, then wait for you to be unable to do them, and use that as evidence of your inferiority.

let me ask you a question. do you feel better after you've been beat 4-0 by a superior barca side, or 4-0 by an inferior stoke city.

perhaps i choose to be inferior, so that when i beat you, you will feel more pain and you will feel more humiliation

The slight dig at the board is a bit of a worry.

There's no getting away from that.

Still, I guess it's to be expected. Let's just hope it doesn't escalate.

It's like Torres is the fly in the ointment of gay haberdashers.

It makes perfect sense if you saw your head off, empty your brain onto the floor, make some jelly in your empty skull, leave it in the fridge overnight to set, then re-attach it in the morning and start typing your thoughts on the internet.
