City fan defiant over 2011 Champions League tattoo

Exclusive by Mike Keegan

May 06, 2010

Manchester City fan Kirk Bradley has been left with a permanent, painful reminder of what might have been.

Before the start of the season the Blues fanatic was so confident of success he had the words “Manchester City 2011 Champions League Winners†tattooed on his arm next to a picture of the European trophy.

But Wednesday night's devastating loss to Spurs means Roberto Mancini's men will not even qualify for the competition, let alone win it next year - delivering Kirk with a double blow.

Within minutes of the final whistle sounding on City's 1-0 defeat our website was flooded with United fans who remembered Kirk's story and seized the opportunity to ridicule the 26-year-old sign language student.

But when contacted by the M.E.N. he remained defiant.

Nursing a hangover after watching the game at the pub, Kirk said: “No regrets. Absolutely no regrets. I know some Reds will gloat but I don't regret it for a second.â€

Far from being embarrassed after his bold, £80 statement turned into tatters Kirk says he has no plans to have it removed.

“I might just get it changed so it reads '2012',†he said. “Or I might just leave it. It's a story and something to tell your friends and relatives. To be honest it's still sinking in.â€

Kirk, from Birmingham, had the tattoo done before the start of this season after the club splashed out millions on new owners.

He told friends he thought the club would triumph at the Wembley final in 2011 and they dared him to have it done.

At the time he declared: "I really believe we have the quality and ambition to go and achieve the biggest prize out there and I think we can do it that soon. "With Mark Hughes at the helm and the money flowing in, we are going to not only challenge the big four, but the whole of Europe as well.â€

Since then Mark Hughes has been sacked and after Wednesday night Europe's biggest prize will have to wait for at least another year.

But as he watched the drama unfold Kirk, who started supporting the Blues after watching them play against Aston Villa as a child, said he did not even think about the tattoo.

“I was just devastated that we had missed out on the Champions League. It wasn't until about half an hour after the final whistle that one of my mates reminded me about it and I was gutted.â€

I've only just realised what you meant there, but right enough!!

He does look like an archetypal Geordie though.

I didn't realise City fans were such dickheads. And all had tattoo fetishes for that matter. Remember that bell end who had 'Kaka' tattooed on his chest?

Let us hope one of them chooses to ink the images of Fernando and Gerrard on his forehead this summer.

When Arsenal were on their 49 game unbeaten run, I met a bloke in the bar with "Arsenal 50 unbeaten" written on the back of his shirt. The same night Arsenal lost and he spent the rest of the night in tears, twat.
