Aldo on Gerrard

John Aldridge has thrown his support behind Jamie Carragher's claim that Steven Gerrard is Liverpool’s greatest player of all-time.

The former Reds striker feels the skipper's ability to turn high profile games on a regular basis stands him out above anybody - even the great Kenny Dalglish.

"It's been a typical kind of week for Steven Gerrard," said Aldridge.

"He led his side to a hugely influential victory at Bolton, came off the bench and scored a hat-trick against the fourth best team in Serie A, then produced another outstanding display against the league leaders.

"But then I wouldn't expect anything less from Stevie, because like Jamie Carragher I believe Steven Gerrard is the greatest player to have ever pulled on the red shirt.

"Now you'd expect Jamie to say that. He's Stevie's team-mate and pal after all.

"But I had the good fortune to play alongside the phenomenal Kenny Dalglish, and I believe Stevie has probably surpassed even King Kenny.

"People say that Stevie can't be considered the best of all time until he's won a league title.

"But he's inspired Liverpool to almost every other trophy - I'm thinking of his Istanbul heroics, his incredible FA Cup final display and his goals in League and UEFA Cup finals."

In recent years Gerrard has helped to terrorise defences playing in a role just behind Fernando Torres.

However, Aldridge reckons his display at the heart of the midfield against Chelsea illustrates that he can make an even greater impact when he starts in the centre of the park.

"He can help the team in a wide variety of positions, but for me the position where he is most effective is where he is now," said Aldo.

"I think Stevie can have the biggest influence on a match from central midfield.

"I particularly liked the way the team was set up against Chelsea on Sunday, with Dirk Kuyt in behind Torres.

"I'd also like to see Glen Johnson come back in on the right of midfield, similar to the way Spurs use Gareth Bale and Everton are currently usuing Seamus Coleman - a youngster who I think can be a great player for Ireland in the future.

"Lucas received plenty of praise for his performance on Sunday.

"If the Brazilian continues the way he played on Sunday he could go on to become a valuable squad player for us.

"But there's no doubt who has been the most valuable player for Liverpool Football Club over the last 12 years.

"For me, Steven Gerrard is the most influential player EVER to have played for The Reds."

He hits on a few interesting points regarding Gerrard, and even the Glen Johnson debate,

The most interesting thing about that article for me is the fact that Aldo clearly sides with those who would play Stevie in CM rather than further forward.

Yeah, definitely. I much prefer him playing in that position too. It was fine him playing the role behind Torres when we had Masher and Alonso in the middle, but without either of the, let alone both, he needs to be playing CM.

Agreed. If Rafa had played him there last season he'd have kept his job and we'd be playing Champions League football now.

Basically I don't think Stevie's better in either one of those positions than he is in the other. To me he's a world-beater in both, and should be played where the team needs him most. For my money there's no question he belongs in CM now unless we make a top signing in that position, and soon.

Yup 4-4-2 with Kuyt and Torres up top and Masher and Stevie in the middle is a pretty strong line up, and we would have probably finished in top 4 if Rafa played that.

For some reason Rafa was more stubborn than usual in his last season.

Gerrard can be a brilliant CM, IMO, but it depends on how much licence you give him to go forward.

We have had massive holes in our CM area in the past when he has played there. It was one of the reasons why a partnership with Xabi never really flourished.

That's true. Especially with a squad as thin as ours, any such choice entails balancing risks as well as potential advantages. However, Stevie seems to me to have matured generally in the last year or two, and I'd be relying on that feeding through into his approach on the field.

I have been saying for a while that Stevie will be classed as the greatest LFC player ever when he retires.

He is the complete player, I fear he may never win the PL though with us, 2008 was our best chance maybe for another generation

Fox I remember us pulling a rabbit out of the hat in 2005. Who would have thought that we would win the CL?

Gerrard still has a few years left in him yet.

He's my favourite footballer ever.

Steven Gerrard is immense.

Gerrard is amazing. Souness with goals.

Souey grabbed his fair share of goals too, remember... There just weren't as many of them because he had two of the world's greatest strikers playing in front of him.

I was at a pre world cup media party in Dublin last summer and Aldo was there along with a number of other ex Irish internationals, over the course of the evening they were getting stuck into the free booze and started letting some interesting information slip. In Aldos case it was the fact that himself and Daglish never got along and he still resented him for flogging him to Sociedad in 89. So hearing him say Gerrard has surpassed Kenny doesnt surprise me

While it doesn't surprise you, he does make a fair point about King Kenny being surrounded by 10 world class players compared to Gerrard.

Are you saying that if Gerrard had two world class strikers in front of him (instead of one) he'd score less goals?

The logic seems counter intuative but its most likely true that in a team with more potent goal scoring threats Gerrard wouldnt have scored so many, he wouldnt have been required to perform the heoics so often and could have played more centrally than he has over the years, one of the most repeated criticisms of Gerrard over the years is that his forays forward have left the team unbalanced and open to counter attacks. Its undoubtedly true, no player can play in two positions so if Stevie was playing in a team that was comfortably beating all arournd them his brief would never have been to surge forward as often

The other way of looking at that is that the King still stood out despite having all that quality around him.
