I really like him on 5live.. definitely one of the better commentators..

His piece for some Belfast rag isn't particularly great but still worth a read.

The other Sunday I sat in the Spurs press room prior to their game against Manchester United. One of the early kick-offs, the Merseyside derby, was being shown on the various television monitors.

I couldn't help but notice that Raul Meireles' goal for Liverpool was greeted in silence whereas the two Everton strikes early in the second half, after which I had to leave to get to the commentary position, provoked roars of approval. To quote the late Rafa Benitez, that is a "fact".

Many of the country's football correspondents were at White Hart Lane - it was easily the biggest game of the day - most with no connection whatsoever to Merseyside. Are they really 'anti-Liverpool' or, for whatever reason, are they against the 'second coming' of Kenny Dalglish and hoping it will fail? I may be entirely wrong but that's how it seemed.

Too stout a defence has been made by too many regarding the Roy Hodgson regime. Too much was made of Dalglish failing to win any of his first three games: after all, two were away from home, a Hodgson 'forte', and the other was the Everton battle. Anyhow, it now looks as if many may be disappointed.

Liverpool will not win the title. They will not qualify for the Champions League. It's unlikely they'll make the Europa League unless they win this season's competition. However, if I correctly lip-read Sammy Lee as he turned to Dalglish after Torres scored Liverpool's third at Molineux, I agree: "We're back!" he screamed.

Wolves' Stephen Ward, who scored the only goal when the sides met just after Christmas, said: "Things change when a new manager comes in and credit to Liverpool, they've come down here (where Chelsea and Manchester City both lost) and been a lot better than when we won at Anfield." Too right.

Saturday's was only Liverpool's third away win in 21 games but it was a huge improvement on anything seen under Hodgson. Dalglish has totally changed the atmosphere with a return to the playing style the club's supporters have longed for: 'the Liverpool way'.

Yes, Fernando Torres was a lone striker but he 'felt' far from alone given the willingness of others, particularly the outstanding Meireles, to rush forward in support. This was a revived Liverpool, a wholly positive Liverpool, casting off the negativity of the previous manager.

It's still a long way forward. The return of Steven Gerrard after suspension tomorrow night against Fulham poses the question as to where Meireles will play. Why not play the skipper deeper and allow the Portuguese international to flourish in that role at the centre of the three behind Torres?

And where, if Ian Holloway isn't affronted by another "disgraceful" bid - I gather Blackpool are being offered at least eight times what they paid for the player - would Charlie Adam fit in?

Surely the priorities lie elsewhere? They need a left back, probably Stephen Warnock, initially on loan, and a really good central defender alongside Daniel Agger. That may have to wait till the summer. Above all, it is essential Dalglish signs a quality striker. That's why Damien Camolli is in Amsterdam in pursuit of Luis Suarez.

But, rest assured, especially certain correspondents, Liverpool are on the up.

There's definitely a lot of snide shit about with regard to Dalglish's return.

I pray he/we get to shove it right down their bitter throats.

Err a lot of people *do* hate Man Utd.

Its just that commentators/journalists can say feck all negative about 'em because they always win. It'd be quite similar for us if we started doing so aswell.

The media are Manc lovers and Slir plays Jedi Mind Tricks on them which works every time!

Well, I wasn't old enough to know the media murmurings when we were good, were we still a bit maligned?

A lot of rival fans do get jealous at the perceived passion of our fans, and the fact that we admittedly do kinda think that we're better than all the other fans sometimes. Yes the media is different, but at the end of the day, they're footie fans too.

The whole package of us being "the most successful," YNWA, big European nights etc really does get on the tits of a lot people, I don't think its the Scouse thing so much.

As I said, not sure how the media were historically towards us, but if we won as many games as United do, I'm sure we'd get a love-in too, however begrudgingly.

I can't remember too much, tbh 🙁

I can't remember if we were hated 'while' we were winning everything; but as soon things went bad, the media seemed to relish our fall from grace far too much.

I remember the media favoring Chelsea in 2005 and I remember fans of other teams ready to twist the knife when we were down 3-0 in the final.

I used to despise Green and his miserable moaning shit. But he HATED Rafa by the end and he HATED Hodgson.
So i have a new found respect for him.

i was surprised how positive he was about rafa after rafa's interview with 5 live recently. said he put very little of the blame on him for our current position - mike ingham was far more scathing.

I always believed about 10 years ago that most journos were spotty little kids in the 70's and 80's, filling in their panini sticker albums and slowly resenting the all conquering Liverpool team of the time. Once they became hacks their vitriol was given a voice, hence the hatred.

That theory would mean that all the Liverpool hating Journo's are at least 35, and their must be a wave of scum haters now. Doesn't seem to be...

He's a Liverpool fan apparantly, but keeps it under wraps. I personally love listening to the guy - he calls a spade a spade, and has been banned from Stalag Trafford, what isn't there to like? The burning pitchforks and riots at the Reebok after he, quite rightly, said that this was the most depressing place to watch football was brilliant!

I used to find him very annoying because, although he's good at actually commentating, he'd waste half of every game grizzling and chuntering about something or other (e.g.during one game it was about too many wires on the commentary box floor). He doesn't seem to do that now, and as a describer of the game and of the atmosphere in the ground there's none better.

In answer to an earlier question, I was around during all the glory years and I don't remember us being resented as much as ManUre are these days. People would sometimes say it would be good for English football if other teams got a look-in, but that's as far as it went.

I can confirm he is, as I was sitting next to him in the Main Stand for a CL game a few years ago.

regards

Yeah, he even did a piece on the offal a while back, though he made a bit of joke about keeping the team he supports under wraps (even as he was writing for the offal, about Liverpool). He also said that he can be very hard on the team he supports because he expects the best from them.

I know some don't like him, and yes he does like a good whinge about this and that, but he is a brave and honest football pundit for taking it to the Fergies and Allardyces of this world. I love him.

Some people just really think most scousers are horrible, thick, unfunny, stabby, loud, bellends.

A lot of people hate Liverpool for the 5 year european ban.

A lot of people have the 'self pity city' view. Or that its insular and backwards while thinking itself to be cultural and important.

Others think Liverpudlians have an unfounded superiority complex.

Liverpool is hated loads! Its not jealousy! The thought of moving to Liverpool would be met with horror!

Actually they are jealous of one thing...Our European Cups. Liverpool 5 - London 0, that pisses off your London based press big time.

He may have tried to keep it under wraps, but he's not done a very good job.

ANd yes, he has been very tough on us at times..

It differs from fan to fan though..I think you can tell when it's a supporter being brutal BECAUSE they're supporters who've been so frustrated.

As opposed to wankers taking delight from our troubles.

Macca really got on our case when he was on ESPN Asia, and Rafa came in for particular bashin..but he was delighted when we got it right and played well and it was obvious how much he cafred for the club.

Yep. Although he has said he's Macclesfield Town fan but I think that was to put people off the scent.

I like Green, he does say it how it is and he is miles better than some of the other snivelling MU apologists on the Beeb. At least he will criticise LFC.

That was the joke Avvy. Writing a piece for the official LFC website in the 'famous fans' section is a slight give away.
