I thought Nunez had ended Jotas Liverpool career?
Nunez was terrible when he came on. His first touch was heavy and ran into blind alleys a number of of times and made a few terrible passes straight to ajax players.

Overall we did deserve to win but we still weren't Thatt great, think we would have really have struggled against a more defensive prem side. Now we have to wait 3 weeks for another game ffs. Fuck International football

Is there a reason that the world's best defender now spends more time keeping his arms behind his back than actually attempting to block the shot, when an opposing forward is shooting?!?! FFS.
He doesn't even need to do that anymore. The rules have changed. He just needs to keep his arms and hands in their natural position (however the fuck that is interpreted as), he is golden.

Even if he wanted to do his arm routine, he could have moved quickly towards the attacker trying to shoot, instead of standing there like a damn statue.

What? I thought he had lost all his pace and was finished because he signed a new contract and is 30.

*Shocked

BTW the Ajax guy who dived to try and con a penalty when Mo tackled back should have got a yellow for simulation. That's one of the worst examples you'll ever see.

I agree. Everyone is piling in on him for the goal but nobody seems to care about how the situation arose. It all started with van Dijk coming high and left with Tsimikas and Fabinho. As the ball moves back the Ajax back like and across the pitch they are slowly moving back into position where Trent picks up the right space. Close enough to Matip. Then the ball gets to Blind. Mo goes to him but doesn’t get there in time. Elliott does go with the man or to cut out the pass. Tent is then the one exposed. Followed by good movement which send van Dijk off course and an excellent finish.

To look at it another way, had Robbo made that pass to Diaz who got by a right back, we’d be creaming ourselves over the play.

Agree, Trent was much improved this game. The goal he couldn't do much, if anything, about

It's the same old with Trent,

Attacking wise he'll give everything, bust a gut to support.

Defensively like Hal said above, he'll trot back and hope Matip or Virg can bail him out.

It's becoming pretty evident to me he doesn't want to defend.

I dunno mate - Nunez simulation of a Liverpool forward is pretty unconvincing - he’s not conning anyone with that touch of his 😉

Laughably bad that was.

Wasn't it the same player who scored the goal, probably why it was never talked about after the game.

Not sure about the identity of the player TBH. My guess would be that everyone, on the field and off it, was so relieved no pen.was awarded that that relief crowded out everything else.

I agree that Trent was not to blame 100% for the goal. But there was a play in the second half where Blind crept up behind him and had a header that just went wide. Ajax could have taken a lead there. Problem is that we are now giving up at least one clear-cut chance per game on the right-hand side. On the whole, he had a much better game.

That's unfair. He didn't creep in behind him. Trent knew he was there. He had 2 players to mark and chose the most dangerous man.

Yeah this was bad too. He waited a couple of seconds and by the time he had bothered to sprint back into position it was too late and Blind should've scored.

Was that the chance where everyone on the left side was clueless and the ball was crossed in?

This situation repeats itself pretty much every game, almost as if he’s not aware of the danger behind him or, if he’s, just incapable of dealing with it. I thought that was a situation where he should challenged Blind and prevented such a gettable chance. Good teams put those away.

Still, as you said, he played much better last night partly, I think, because we had better control in midfield.

You think he should be challenging the man further away from the goal?

Blind is the LB. Bergwign the LW.

Trent's man and the most dangerous player in this scenario is the LW (as he's closer to the centre of the goal).

I was very critical of Trent last week, and generally he's been shocking defensively and effort-wise lately, but this situation is the fault of others. Thiago lost the ball and recovered slowly, Kostas and Trent were out of position (thinking we had possession), VVD and Matip are marking the same man. TAA is then left with 2 at the back post.

That photo is a bit misleading. If you watch the video, you will notice he completely misreads the flight of the ball and moves slowly towards number 7, giving number 17 a decent header at goal.

Maybe I should have said challenged for the ball rather than challenge Blind.

I disagree. The Ajax man is crossing from literally inside our box, he's got maybe half a season to make a choice.

I think when you're running back at pace, you have to choose a man to pick up. You don't have time to read a flight of the ball exactly and hope the crosser has overhit/underhit it perfectly to drop on your head. You've got to get close to who you think is a man that can score, and then try and affect them.

The goal they scored? He can carry some blame on that one for sure.

But that chance above? I think it's a collective failure and Trent was left stranded.

We know he's been shocking lately, but what I'm not going to do is do what our rivals want us to do and pile on Trent for every collective mistake made, just because he was a part of it.
