Daniel Agger admits he has a fight on his hands to play regular first-team football at Liverpool next season.
The Dane agreed a new deal earlier in the summer despite having to settle for 26 senior appearances last term.

Agger knows he will have to be on top form to increase this number in 2009-10, with Jamie Carragher and Martin Skrtel proving to be one of the Barclays Premier League's meanest partnerships over the last 12 months.

Despite the rivalry, Agger is a keen admirer of Skrtel - and admits he was shocked at how good the Slovakian was after arriving from the Russian Premier League 18 months ago.

"Martin is a top, top player. I was surprised when he came just how good he was," Agger told LFC Magazine.

"I have to be honest and say I don't know much about the Russian Premier League, so I did not really know what to expect when Martin came to the club.

"But he's a really good player and, just as importantly, he's a really good guy to have in the dressing room too. He's a guy who's good to talk to away from the pitch and who I admire a lot because of the way he plays on it.

"If you play all the time, if you get the chance to play week in, week out, then you must be a good player.

"I don't care if Martin and I are rivals for a starting place, he's still a friend of mine and I'll still tell the world how highly I rate him.

"He's an excellent defender and will keep getting better.

"We are competing with each other, maybe, to play in the team but it's not a rivalry. Both of us play and train to the best of our ability and then the manager makes the decision."

Sounds to me like Agger is talking up himself and Skrtel as pals and as a future cenre back pairing.

Either that or they have a shared interest in dogging 😱

The Agger fans on here who have felt it necessary to talk Skrtel down in the past should now be feeling a right load of charlies.

Skrtel had some horrendous games for us last season, but overall, he deserved his spot.

he's still suspect positionally, so no.

Oh, I knew you wouldn't, neil. That's why I said "should" rather than "will". You'll have to forgive me if I take Agger's opinion in preference to yours.

That Kenny Daglish feelgood factor must be kicking in alraedy.

Next up, Reina to praise Shitandje!

Why should they, Its all about opinions all players come out with statements claiming team mates are great players/friends. Gerrard gave Lucas his backing last season it doesn't make him a great player.

that's okay, agger's opinion is valid I just think skrtel is an accident waiting to happen so you'll forgive me if I keep my fingers, arms and legs crossed agger get the nod over skrtel come the first game in august.

Quite

I think Agger's just about the better player but there's not much in it. It'll be interesting to see who Benitez selects on the first game of the season.

I disagree all most Agger fans said was they thought Agger was the better defender. Its not like we were panning Skrtel.

you speak for yourself 😉

i didnt see skrtel as suspect at all, he is a very good solid defender. When agger is playing well he offers more going forward but defensively skrtel is top drawer IMO. Im pleased we have got both and i imagine that in the future they will be our centreback pairing.

I think the defensive unit was pretty culpable last season, we conceded 4 in games with Agger and Skrtel. Arbeloa had iffy moments, Dossena proved a nightmare, Aurelio still has his off days, Insua is a new lad and Carra looked jaded and tired towards the end of the campaign.

There were issues all over, not to mention that each season's start sees us sluggish in getting our zonal marking together.

I don't see a reason to play down Agger to praise Skrtel, they're both tremendous young defenders and we're very lucky to have them both.

I'm probably as big a Agger fan on here as they come but I was constantly trying NOT to talk Skrtl down when arguing that the former should be playing on his behalf.

I rate them both I just think Agger is the better player, but as I do reckon him to be potentially one of the best there's still a lot of room for Skrtl to be deemed great as well.

Can't wait to see them play alongside eachother we could be in for a right treat for years to come. As Mark said, we're lucky to have them both.
