if we finish outside the top 4 wouldn't rafa have earnt the right for one more season, especially when you factor in the injuries.

All he will have earnt is the sack.
We made the mistake to give Houiller another season.
We must not make the same mistake again.

what if the new manager comes 5th in his first season, do we sack him as well?

One title challenge in 5 years, A squad that still lacks any sort of depth, a 1st team that still relies heavily on just 2 players and boring uninspired football that is precisely 1 million miles away from what we wanted when we brought him in. IMO he either gets 4th (convincingly, by the end) and starts to get us playing something like, or he goes.

I'm of the opinion you work towards a title challenge. I expect nothing in the first three years, only then is the squad the managers. if rafa had a '5 year plan' (and he never said he did) then he challenged for the title in year 5.

A better manager than Rafa wont come 5th with that squad.
I still cant imagine not finishing 4th. That would be a disaster.
Even 4th wouldnt be enough to keep him in my eyes.

Well I'm of the opinion that 2 years is long enough to shape a 1st team to a satisfactory point and it's certainly long enough to learn the league so I would expect a challenge in year 3. I also don't think 1 challenge is good enough in 5 years for a team that hasn't won the league in 19 years. I'd rather get a new manager in next year (if it all goes tits up this year (stays tits up I should say)) who can start building their team while we still have some brilliant talents, who's to say that if we missed out on 4th this year that we'd get in next year? Think about the players that would want away then and the calibre of manager that we'd be able to attract, we'd be a far worse proposition if that were to happen.

We're a 2 man team, fuck sake no-one ever thinks of the carnage that would happen if Pepe got injured!

If we don't finish 4th but do win a trophy, I'd keep Rafa but make it clear that CL qualification is non-negotiable for next season. If we get neither 4th place nor a trophy, he'll be on very thin ice.

A top four finish and i'd let him carry on next season.

If we win a trophy then see above.

If we end up out of the CL places and no trophy then i'd be open to change if:

1. A top class established manager has shown interest in the job.
2. Our finances allow us to get rid AND still have a reasonable transfer kitty available.

Undoubtedly. Rafa has made his mistakes. He also has his set ways - when it works out he's a genius, when it doesn't he looks mediocre. I believe that he represents our best way forward and I'm hoping he gets enough backing to be able to prove it.

I think that's about right.

Ours finances allow us to get rid and have a resonable budget!

FFS thats the same finances that made us sell sell sell, and use the earnings to pay the wages of our players we already have, "and if theres any left buy who you want".

but of course we couldn't buy, because that profit went of lowering the loan we wouldn't have when we sold our club to the yanks!

Moores could have just loaned the same amount (even less 250 million), and we'd be playing in a fucking brand new stadium right now, with the extra 1 million a home game profit going on paying off the loan AND buying new players to 'get us up there'.

moores didn't/doesn't have the assets to secure a 200 (plus) million loan

He should go.....

Football is a fickle sport nowadays.....it's bad enough that Liverpool continuously agree to these bizarre '5 year plans' - whilst other 'winning' clubs simply don't.

Agreed. Add the fact we have no keeper if Reina ever got injured!

Benitez never made a 5 year plan.

And just because other clubs are trigger happy doesn't mean we should follow their lead.

Great post Rafa4PM.
I agree with every word.
Why do SO many posters on here seem to ignore your first point?

I'm loathe to reply to you alone again Dreamy, but what the fuck for several reasons:

1) What has that got to do with anything?
2) We do have a back-up keeper
3) We apparently have several promising youth goalkeepers comign through the ranks too
4) Who's United's back-up Keeper, Foster? HAHAHAHAHA
5) And Arsenal's? Mannone? They don't have a fucking first choice keeper.
6) And Chelsea's? I don't even know who he is.
7) WHAT THE FUCK

What has our back-up goalkeeper situation got to do with ANYTHING?

When it comes from me mate, i think it has something to do with the fact that i unashamedly suck Rafa's cock on here on a regular basis.

Joking aside, it should be taken into serious consideration before we do take any action on this matter (*hopes it doesn't come to that*). Maybe some people think that the draw of LFC is enough to get our pick of any manager around?

i used to think dream was a wum. i'm such an optimist.

CL qualification has been the minimum requirement for years now. Its difficult to see how he could hang on.

Having said that, if we don't qualify money will be tighter than ever, attracting another top manager will be difficult anyway and having to pay Benitez (and potentially his staff) off will make matters worse still.

So strangely Benitez's position could be in more danger if we just scrape into the CL.
