Barca chief: Torres was over-priced
February 9, 2011

Barcelona have said they would 'not even consider' paying £50 million for one player, as Chelsea did for Liverpool striker Fernando Torres last week.

Between them, Chelsea and Liverpool were involved in £135 million worth of deals on transfer deadline day, while the giants of Spain spent just £2.5 million on bringing in Dutch international Ibrahim Afellay.

"I was shocked by the amount spent, especially in the winter time. I felt the amount was very high," Barcelona director of football Raul Sanllehi said at the Annual General Meeting of the European Clubs Association. "I know Barcelona would not do that sort of signing now, we would not even consider it.

"Of course we have a budget, but a budget is like a blanket - if you pull it up to your chin, you need your feet to stay warm," he added. "An additional value of those signings was that Chelsea diminished one of their opponents at the same time as strengthening their own team.

"So Chelsea got stronger and Liverpool got weaker, even though Liverpool won the game against them on Sunday. But in my personal opinion, Torres was over-priced."

Barcelona have spent big in the past, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic moving from Inter Milan for £40 million plus Samuel Eto'o in part-exchange in 2009 and Valencia's David Villa joining for £32 million a year later.

However, Sanllehi claimed the club do not have that kind of money anymore, and that they needed to strike their £125 million shirt sponsorship deal with the Qatar Foundation to help them balance their books.

"Let's not fool ourselves, we needed the money for the Qatar deal. We wouldn't have done it without a lot of money involved for sure,'' he added. "That's what our president said. I would understand that, the need for funds was a clear driver for the whole thing."

That could be a real bargain!

Translation: "You see how we fucked Liverpool over on the Mascher fee Chelsea? That's what you could have done with Torres"

The only reason he's 'over-priced' is because they no longer have any money. Over-priced is £25m for a DM to sit on the bench or £60+ mil for a forward only to loan him out a year later.

But yeah, that' aside, that's some good business (£2.5mil for Afellay). Not sure where or even when he'll play though.

Barca have wasted massive amounts of money in the last few years on players they've not gotten much return for.

Still, that was the old regime I suppose (one the current one should be eternally thankful to though).

It must be a little hard buying for Barca really. A world class LB aside (and they have more than decent options in Abidal, Maxwell and Adriano) their starting eleven can't really be improved that much.

Haha

In the words of brendan: ' what a bunch of tippy-tappy bellends!'

To be fair if Chelsea got ripped off what happened to them with eto'o and £40m.

Its safe to say inter were laughing all the way to the bank with that one !

Oh and isn't there some eastern european cb who they spinner mad amounts on, ou to sell bk to the original club for a stupid amount less?

yeah chygrynsky

Talk of a £9M summer bid for him. Would be good business for them. £6.5M profit in 6 months.

We should just leave him to waste away there for choosing Barca over us. He didn't really think that he was gonna get game time there?

Fucking hell, are we buying everybody ?
[/quote]

Yes!

We're gonna blow everyone's mind this summer. Our squad will consist of 50 players. At least 4 players per position. Man City thought they were special.
We'll boast footballing greats like Sylvain Marveux, Arriaga, Barriaga, Arriaga II, Arroglia and Pitzosa.

What the fuck are they talking about they wouldnt spend 50m on one player? They spent 67m on Ibrahimovic (given the estimated 27m value of Etoo)
Stupid cunts.

Barca and Milan are hypocrites of the highest order. They have much to say simply because they haven't spent in this window.
