A single goal...

... hasn't knocked the stuffing out of me like today's goal since, well, you know when.

I honestly think it's been 20 years since I've been this devastated by one goal. Maybe that FA Cup final, but this one is right up there...

The air just got sucked out of the whole world when that went in.

Really?

I was deflated like, but not to that extent. I guess a bit of me half expected it could and would happen.

I suppose that it was the magnitude of what it means for us combined with the keystone cops impression our defenders were doing while two of them waltzed in on our goal to knock us out...

It was hard to take considering the amount of time left but certainly not as devastating as 26th May 1989 when Michael Thomas scored that goal

Lyon didn't mind a draw and never did press us much, until we scored. I was half expecting them to score and even to win after that! That is how low my confidence on the team/defense is right now.

Hence the opening line of my initial post.

I was more surprised by the nature of our goal than the manner in which we conceded.

It was gut-wrenching, sure. But there's been far more heart breaking goals in the last twenty years.

Inzaghi's second.
Lucio's winner.
Arshavin's fourth.
Cantona's volley
Anelka's cross-cum-shot.

Off the top of my head.

Was the FA Cup goal you were referring to in your initial post, the Cantona goal?
Yep.

Inzaghi's second. Never thought we'd win that one - Karma owed us
Lucio's winner. Maybe - That's a contender
Arshavin's fourth. That was such a stupid game, it hurt, but not like today
Cantona's volley Yep - I mentioned that one
Anelka's cross-cum-shot. Kinda sorta but still not like today

Off the top of my head.

This is more just the repeated failure that's getting me.

I'm in losing gambler mode right now, I can't be arsed talking about anything football related right now, and even though I keep losing, I just want the next game to come. Roll on Sunday.

i think it was worse because we scored and thought it's going to be okay then were reminded it's not, a high but then pulled down to the ground.

Not even close to the Thomas goal. A whole season of angst got rolled up and hurled at a 1000 miles an hour striking deep into the solar plexus.

The Fa cup loss to the scum in 99 was also devastating. Yorke and solskcunt with 2 goals in the last minute to beat us 2-1 after more than 80 years of failure to beat them in the cup.

I could go on. Tonight's goal will not be remembered come saturday.

Whereas the other goals were 'nails in the coffin,' tonight's was merely taking fate out of our own hands. Big difference. Things can still play out for us!

It will be "remembered come Saturday". It will be remembered for years to come too probably. It may not be the most devastating goal we've ever conceded, but that shouldn't diminish it's importance or significance.

Nothing could ever do to me what Arsenal's 2nd goal done to me in '89. I was sick for months. I half expected Lyon to score. Defensively, we've been pants all season.

This one hurt a lot also because of the sheer emotion Babel's goal created for me. I was celebrating more than I have celebrated a goal in a long time.

After the game I didn't feel able to really concentrate on anything so just got into bed and did a bit of internet surfing before going to sleep.

I think that's true; but this one meant an awful lot as well.

I was gutted by it more than I expected; We were about to be in a strong position with two games to play and last season was about to repeat itself in the league and in Europe. Then a piss poor goal from a team which really is genuinely average and the whole season just collapsed on itself.
Aye, s'pose.

I think I was just resigned to seeing us concede really.
Given your statement prior to the game; "If it's 0-0 at half time we'll win", I'm finding this statement a little difficult to reconcile.

Yeah. I think that was more of a surprise than their goal.

Tell me about it ...

It was a massive kick in the scrotum, but there have been bigger moments of depression for me. We were much closer to real success when Cantona scored in '96, and dont forget the Riise og in '08 vs Chelsea.
Last night was not a massive surprise for me, the form we are in is piss poor and the luck we are having at the moment is shocking.

Ha!

Blame Sheik for that. I logged on on tuesday completely resigned to defeat. After reading a few of Sheik's uber-optimistic anal injections, I turned.
