These are the options listed by The Echo :

  • The old boy - Javier Mascherano: Has played centre back at Barcelona and, though Premier League is more physical, would be nice to see him in a red shirt again.
  • The Premier League experience - Jonas Olsson: Always gives Liverpool problems when they play West Brom. He’s 33 now but adds height and strength to the back line. Just put him on roller skates, perhaps.
  • The Bundesliga signing - Dominic Maroh: Slovenian international is a powerful player, who plays alongside Jonas Hector in Cologne. A trusted hand for the Bundesliga side.
  • The marquee youngster - Jonathan Tah: Big things are expected of the 20-year-old Leverkusen defender, who has been linked with plenty of top clubs. Would cost a fair bit.
  • The bargain - Martin Caceres: Uruguayan who didn’t see contract renewed by Juventus. Injury prone, which wouldn’t solve problem, but undoubted class.
Others mentioned are Scott Dann (29), Martin Demichelis (free agent - 35), Steven Taylor (free - 30), Thomas Vermaelen (linked in the Express today - 30), Dante (32), Christopher Samba (32). And there's always Lucas, Wisdom and Tom Brewitt.

The cunt that refused to play and left us? He can stay gone.

Oh hell no!

Who?

Hell yeah!! Great prospect.

Good versatile player but I don't think he'll be content with being a back up. Would cost us also.

From Liverpool and a fan. Would possibly agree to be a back up. Would only sign on a free or for a very low fee.

Martin Demichelis (free agent - 35)

Nope.

Steven Taylor (free - 30)

Hella nope.

Thomas Vermaelen (linked in the Express today - 30)

Too injured.

Dante (32)

Nah...

Christopher Samba (32)

Nah...

And there's always Lucas (legend), Wisdom(sell) and Tom Brewitt (too inexperienced).

I'd like to add Niklas Sule to the equation.

Lucas is going stay on another season isn't he.. ??

Makeshift CB...

Just when we where about to get rid, again he gets another reprieve...

He must be into Witchcraft/Voodoo or something...

I'd take Mascher back in an instant (he did not "refuse to play" - it was Hodgson who said that FFS) but I'd want him in his old position, as DM tidying up in front of the back four. He's not equipped to deal with the aerial threat from Prem strikers.

Olsson's one of the dirtiest players in the league. The few who've insisted on slating Skrtel for various things would burst a blood vessel if they saw this thug playing for us.

Don't know too much about Maroh or Tah but on the face of it they look like decent possibilities.

Caceres has been a good player in his time, but if he's a sicknote that is deffo something we do not need.

Not interested in any of the others except as emergency stopgaps.

I'd rather have Gareth McAuley than Jonas Olssen but they've both signed new contracts anyway

Any of the Villa guys, Okore / Richards?

Mascher back would be great all round. Proven winner, tenacious competitor and great pro. Could do a job in two positions and would be great influence on youngsters.
Sadly, we have absolutely no chance of it happening.

Mascher back would be amazing but it won't happen. Who's that Iceland dude that was boss in the Euros?

Sakho, matip and lovren may well be enough with Lucas as back up. If he's happy to stay as a bit part squad player/emergency cover/utility/dm/cb kinda player. He was pretty good at CB when he filled in.

I agree with modo.

Sule and tah

If we wanted to spend biggish I'd be a fan of schar as well

There isn't much point buying a young defender for loads of money unless we're willing to consign Gomez to the scrapheap because that's what buying someone like Tah would mean.

A utility player who can play in the middle and at RB or LB would be ideal because we have zero cover in either FB position.

We could do much worse than a player with CL-winning experience in Mathieu who can cover both CB and LB. There is some concern about him being able to adapt to the EPL at age 32, but usually French players adapt quite well here. Being linked with him is a promising development.

He is a bit injury-prone, which is a worry – missed 12 games with Barca last season and the Euros with France due to various injuries. Still, he started 20 games in all competitions for Barca last season, which is not too shabby. He played twice as many minutes as Vermaelen.
