"Piracy along the coastline of Somalia and the Gulf of Aden has reached epidemic proportions, making it the most dangerous shipping lane in the world. Kidnapping, theft and murder are rife and the authorities are powerless to prevent it. But now a Russian cruise ship is turning the tables by inviting rich Russians to set sail and hunt the pirates.
The idea is simple. For £3,500 a trip, wealthy customers can sail aboard a cruise ship from Djibouti to Mombasa, travelling at 5 knots and hugging the Somali coast as closely as possible, as an open invitation to pirates. Once the ship is under attack, the Russians can retaliate with unlimited use of the cruise ship's state-of-the-art arsenal, including AK47 assault rifles, RPGs and mounted heavy machine guns, and try to sink the pirate ship. Because they are acting in self-defence they can kill with impunity and, to ensure passenger safety, the rich Russians are guarded by ex-members of Russia's elite special forces."
If I had £3,500 to spend on a holiday, I might fancy some of that. 8)
