A message from Albert Riera

Shortly after completing his move from Liverpool to Greek outfit Olympiacos, Albert Riera penned this letter to all Liverpool fans.

Dear Liverpool supporters,

I would like to say goodbye and thank you for the opportunity to play in this fantastic club. I would like to thank the fans for their support; you're unbelievable. I would also like to thank the staff and my team mates.

I would like to wish the club all the best for the new season, I can see there's a lot of changes taking place and its like a breath of fresh air into the club. I think the club will have a very positive future.

I want the fans to remember me as a player who tried to give his best. My first year here was one of the best seasons and the closest the club have come to winning the Premier League.

Last season was a season for everyone to forget in all ways, which can happen to any club. In football it's important to look forward and forget the past.

I felt it was time for a change and I'm looking forward now to the new challenges which lie ahead.

Best wishes
Albert Riera

It's not a competition, George.

It would be good if it was though.

Sometimes people can show the best of themselves when they leave a situation which had turned sour.

Handsome words from Uncle Albert there. No hard feelings and I hope things work out for him in Greece.

That's true. Looking forward to Mascherano's effort. Did Insua or Aurelio give us owt?

He had the first touch of a truly special player, and he was also a smart footballer, who kept possession well and could play intelligent balls from time to time, as well as offering decent support to the left back. But ultimately a lack of pace will always haunt a wingers career and that was the case with Riera. He wasn't much of a crosser either, which rendered him quite ineffective in the Premier League.

The best thing he bought to Liverpool was the balance to the side which gave a platform for our truly special players, G&T, to perform at their very, very best.

All the best, Riera, you bloody mentalist.

Really nice of him to take the time to write something to the fans. Obviously his relationship with Rafa affected his opportunities and I'd probably say affected his performances too - but he did give us great balance with his ball retention and passing. Who knows, if he had been used properly in his last year we could be preparing for CL qualifications now.

All the best of luck for your future career mate.

"Sorry for being a bit of a cunt" might have elevated that letter to a point where it was actually worthwhile. As it is, it's all a bit meh.

Just a guess, most newspapers are reporting it tomorrow.

Didn't have to call us a sinking ship either - regardless of how accurate it is.

'fantastic club', 'unbelievable fans', 'a lot of changes taking place and its like a breath of fresh air ', 'I think the club will have a very positive future'.
That's hardly calling us a sinking ship.

And can you really argue with 'Last season was a season for everyone to forget in all ways, which can happen to any club. In football it's important to look forward and forget the past'?

He was a bit of a mentalist but he did give us the balance we needed and who knows, maybe if he had been played more we could've been preparing for the CL qualifiers instead of the EL qualifiers.

I think if he hadnt got his move, he'd still be calling us a 'sinking ship'.
I don't think so.

I think it's pretty clear his beef was with Benitez rather than the club itself. And we were a sinking ship with Benitez in charge last year.

I wasn't referring to his farewell message. He did however call us a sinking ship a while back, and though it may be have been (still is?) accurate I am tired of players/managers airing their shit in public. Anyway, he's gone now, and I wish him the best of luck, but that's about it.
I agree in general. But when you've just been a key player in the teams best season in decades and then you are dropped without reason and outcast by the manager who won't even talk to you or tell you why and you see kids and adapted players being tried and failing in your position and you're training hard and want to play and it's going on for months on end would you not eventually explode too? I don't resent Albert at all, I resent Benitez for being a prick.
Same story for Keane, Crouch, Hyppia, Riise, Gonzales I'm sure there's more.
