5 subs

I don’t think it’s about a single game, but managing the minutes of the squad. We play every 4 or 5 days till the end of the season. We need to be clever about how long players are on the pitch.

The option seems good to have to me.
can’t see any massive down sides but maybe I’m missing something

Yeah I'm not liking the whole five subs thing becoming permanent. As temporary solution during COVID times, yes.
Like others have stated it disrupts the game. In our case, we play a football that is among other things meant to break other teams down. Having five fresh players ready to come in might make that a lot harder.

Referees could cut down on the 15-30 seconds it takes for throw-ins a hundred times a game. Add 5 subs. It's a wash.

Opponents start with 11 fresh players and we grind them down. They add 5, we add 5, we still grind them down. Not worried about it.

Also it’s an option, no ? So don’t have to, if I’m right..
can’t see a problem, trial it in the prem and see how it goes would be a way forward ..but I’m ok with it

By that logic, may as well go with roll on, roll off.

I agree with Modo, for me football is better when you have tiring teams. So many of our goals are in the last 15 minutes.

5 subs will cut that down.

The only downside for me is that teams like city who have an abundance of top drawer players can replace top drawer with top drawer five times a game. We can’t.

Its in every other league, Champions league, Europa League, Euros and World cup.
Given the amount of games the players are having to deal with its the only correct thing to do. Long overdue as well.

Look at it from another point of view. It will make it easier to give young players a chance, and most likely prevent injuries.

Yeh I agree..the amount of games and fast turnaround of them, Klopp is always saying about how players need rest in between, it helps around that imo
maybe it won’t be so great for some of the bottom of the league clubs , perhaps it would affect them more negatively , not sure..

Yes.. because when Klopp has had the chance with 5 subs, he's taken those opportunities to blood youngsters. Hasn't he? Oh!

Well, if it's games when we're up by 3 goals, I've seen him give a kid 5-10 mins

They should have never allowed substitutes at all. In the good old days players would play 85 minutes with broken collar bones, go home on the bus and be up at 6am next day for a shift in the mines.

The world has gone soft
Jeez there would have been no Thiago in them days

No no, you have to keep it at 3 subs. Cant disrupte the flow of the game. Who cares about the players.

The point about young players is key for me. Imagine we have Elliott, Carvalho and Gordon next season as back-up attackers + Morton and maybe Bradley or Neco as well: overall 3-5 young players on the bench in a typical game. Yes, playing the last 15 minutes of a game might not be quite what these youngsters aspire to, but it's much better than being left on the bench with no opportunity to grow each week by playing. Yes, one might reasonably say that clubs managed to develop young players with 3 subs and even when subs weren't allowed at all – but times are changing, ambitious young players like Carvalho or Gordon won't be happy to sit on the bench for long periods between occasional starts – if we want them to come to us as opposed to Borussia Dortmund or Leipzig, we need to offer them something more.

I think as a spectator it also helps for the game command my interest more as well – if we're winning by 2-3 goals, I might tune out in the end, but I'll be all eyes if someone like Morton comes on for the last part of the game. I think it's a welcome change.

As a citeh fan I’d be up for it., but not beneficial for teams who ain’t blessed with massive talented bench.

I don't understand why the whole sub thing has to be such a drama in the top leagues. There are 5 officials watching the game. I'd have the 4th official managing this and he allows the incoming player to come on as soon as the infield player leaves the field (at the centre in front of the fourth official). Then there is no delay, it can happen whilst there game continues (but can also happen during a dead ball). The crowd can be notified on the main screen and on the speaker system. There is literally no reason to stop the game for up to 2 minutes just to swap players!
