despite this horrific run of form (what is it now, 6 wins in 22?), we're still only 4 points behind 4th place.

Now I know this is really not what we wanted this year but in order for the club to push forward next year, 4th place is key. We just need to get on a good run of form. I'm not sure if the players still 'want it', or if Rafa can get them to believe they 'can' do it but 4th place is still there for the taking.

Beat Spurs in 3 days, and we're back in business confidence wise ...

Are yo forgetting the games in hand that can put 2 teams alot further than 4 points ahead of us.

Plus we have f*ck all chance of beating Spurs at the moment.

Yeah I mentioned this yesterday during the City/Everton game. Beat Spurs and we're in the thick of it. The squad is still rubbish though and confidence is low, so it's a BIG if without Gerrard and Torres. Even if we beat Spurs, we're still likely to slip up in the next game.

Aquilani and Maxi really need to show their worth for us now.

Ever the optimist eh Pat? There's only Villa, and Arsenal who are 3rd anyway who have a game in hand.

If Villa win their game in hand (which they will against West Ham today), I think they're exactly 4 points ahead of us too. Arsenal are in the group fighting for 1-3, so it doesn't really involve us.

Pat is just trying to do the opposite of what he did two years ago. It worked last year but this year ...

I'm not giving up on us getting something from this season and to me something = 1) a few of our kids soldify their claim to a squad place (be it Kelly, or Pacehco, or whoever) 2) we get 4th place and 3) we make a long run in the Europa Cup. I know it's sad saying this as a fan of a team that should be winning titles but I'm a realist and that's what we have going for us now, so let's go get it.

Problem is that for getting those missing points, and for that we need to score. We hardly look like being capable of scoring these days. We don't seem to have the players for doing that. Let's hope Maxi can help in this dpartment, or maybe give Pacheco some playing minutes.

Ha I'm afraid I just can't see us winning enough games to make it. 6 in 22 christ.
Sorry City don't but they will hold their own til May. Can't see us overtaking all 3 at the moment. Where will the goals come from without Torres?

No man, just can't see us doing it with Rafa in charge. We just don't look like scoring while looking like conceding every time we concede a set piece.

I'd actually like the Greek to play every game if Rafa stays as we'll need his height.

I said as much in my other reply Pat.. Let's see what happens with Babel first. There's no way we're gonna be able to get by without investing in a striker now.

If we can maintain that kinda fighting spirit like yesterday, we might have a chance.

I hardly see our team being that committed in the past few games, they looks like some clueless part-timers who is not even fit for Championship football.

I'd honestly rather Rafa went and a new manager care taker or what not gave Babel the belief I think he needs to be our answer.

[/quote]

Ha ha I believe Babel when he tweets that he needs someone to believe in him and he will prove how good he is.

Rafa has never been that manager.

wish as you may Rafa is not going anywhere yet and Babel will not come good in the meantime.

so carry on.

Exactly.

Is there any truth in the Gerrard rumours? I dont think so personally, but getting him back into form is vital in our 4th place chase.

Oh, and Babel should be sold asap. Rafa cant get the best out of him and havent got a clue were to use him. And Im sick of his twittering.

It is quite weird when you actually look at the table (all depression aside) to realize that we're not actually that far off - Arsenal were in a much worse position last season chasing Villa for example. It's been a very unpredictable season in many ways and probably the most open for quite some time.

That said, I'm struggling to see us put it together as well. We've had a number of opportunities already to really take a grip on the situation, but nothing really changes. The performances don't really get any better, the results don't get any better and our position in the table doesn't really get any better. Unlike Arsenal, we find ourselves fighting three challenges off and even if Villa suffer their usual post-Jan collapse, we have to assume that at least one team will last the distance.

A lack of confidence (and in some cases passion as well) is a major part of the problem but that's not going to change until we can somehow string a few results together. And whilst we're having to pick teams like we did yesterday, it's hard to see that happening. It just seems like the only solution right now is to go and spend 30M on players because after months of excuses, it's clear we're just not good enough.

Everton (prior to yesterdays game against City) were only four places behind us in 11th, yet closer points wise to the bottom of the table than they were to us. While we're four points off fourth. Mad.

i'd like to think of it in that way - but that is essentially how every other fulham, villa or spurs fan has perceieved the league table for the last 10 years. Grim times.

have you explained this yet?

Blind optimism as per usual.

We're on a shit run, can't even beat a bottom Div 1 team and Stoke, what makes you think you can beat a resurgent Spurs ?

Get the fuck real.

We're gone through bad runs before (admittedly not as long as this) and got beat by worse sides in the FA Cup. A resurgent Spurs who drew 0-0 at Hull?

Come on.

Are you telling me that Spurs have not been a resurgent force, since Harry took over ? They beat us too this season, remember ?

"blind optimism"?

Not really, just saying we've been shit and we can still turn this around. We beat Villa, we can beat Spurs. I don't know if we will - but I think we can.

I think it's time for Dirk Kuyt to get on one of his hot streaks ... Let's hope it starts with a hat trick against Spurs.

It won't happen.

We don't have anything to hurt them.

If we can get the win on Wednesday, then we have a great chance of finishing 4th.

Oh and another player coming in wouldn't go amiss either.
