Back to that 2007 side though

It reminds me that with the right spine, anything is possible

That team had Reina, Carragher, Hyypia, Mascherano, Alonso, Gerrard.

Fuck me, what a base
We've not even come close to having a spine that good since then

Can you imagine grafting Salah, Mane and Firmino onto that spine? We lacked on the flanks and up front back then. Now it's the reverse!

Exactly, his teams were generally a lot more than the sum of their parts. Except the Torres/Gerrard/Alonso/Carragher/Reina/Mascherano/Aurelio/Arbeloa/Agger team of a couple of years later - that somehow felt like less than the sum of its parts.

You mean he built a team?

Love Rafa, as I've gone on record many times saying, but still think he fucked up not starting both Bellamy and Crouch in Athens. That Milan defence wouldn't have known what to do with them.

I felt like an outcast because I didn't feel as excited about Fowler's return as everyone else. It was a bit depressing because he was so obviously past his best and it seemed another desperate, low-cost option.

Yeah, his arse was the size of mine. I was totally meh about the whole thing.

Conversely, when was driving down the M56 that morning and heard that Houllier had actually sold him to Leeds I thought about hunting the Frog cunt down and killing him.

I gotta say that the Athens final was one of my fave couple of away days with LFC. Just a laugh from start to finish. So yeah, I'm getting over my Rafa issues. It was Chelsea that did it to me.

It was miraculous the first time around in Istanbul to make that final.

But the 2007 run was warranted in my opinion.

We had a much stronger side (although not the strongest in Europe - but a strong side nevertheless).

What we really had was a strong spine in the starting XI - Reina, Carragher, Agger, Alonso, Mascherano, Gerrard.

Our only real weaknesses were options up top and on the flanks.

Kuijt was ok but never one to bang in the goals, Crouch was limited in what he offered to the side.

Pennant - from what I remember of that final was in great positions but his delivery for the final ball really cost us. We were dominating until Milan scored their first against after we butchered a few.

I don't suppose anyone needs reminding what I thought about him. I fucking hated him.

It's odd that I seem to come down on the "wrong side" of many "Liverpool Cult Hero" types, those classic underdog players that are shit for ages and then start becoming popular with the fans. Lucas was another one. Firmino another. Was Biscan one?

How any fan can watch all of Crouch's goals and not like him is baffling.

He scored so many sensational goals.

I liked Crouch, turned quite effective.

As much as Istanbul was a miracle, Athens was a complete waste, we had a markedly better team and should have won.

Indeed. How else is one going to explain that cheating little pipsqueak Inzaghi's two offside goals and Rafa's brainfart in taking Masher off when he'd had Kaka on toast up till then?
