11/12 vs 10/11

Right, if we fail to beat Newcastle on friday we have 31 points after 19 games, compared to 25 after 19 games last season.

There is no doubt that we play much much better football, that Kenny has gotten the club, fans and players working together again and that the signs are promising.

BUT, regarding return of investment I think we should be delivering an even better first half of tbe season. 6 points ( potentially 9 ) better than 10/11 isnt great when you think of how shite we were last season.

Regarding 4th place, which is our goal this season, we were 11 points off after 19 games last season alrhough with a game in hand as Spurs had 36 points after 20 games. We had a negative goal difference of -1.

Being 3 points off 4th with all the draws we've had this season just shows how tight the league is and thst the teams around us also drops and will drop points. A win against Newcastle will set us up nicely for an exciting finish if we can adress the key area of our problems - goals.
Will be interesting to see what Henry does, opens up the wallet and go for it or see if this squad is good enough to solve the problems by themselves.

I think we have to buy a striker, and a top quality one aswell. Our 35 mill signing is looking horrendously bad atm, and we desperatly need to add some firepower to win us the games we are drawing now.

We have the best defensive record in the league and that doesnt get enough credit imho, mainly because we cant convert our own chances. But that sets us up nicely for a good finish if we can solve the goalscoring problems.
Great teams always have a great defence, so at least we are on the right track there.

A 68-70 points total will see us rightin the mix for 4th, thats we're are headed or thereabouts so get a striker in early and we might see a shedload of goals happen. Shaking things up a bit could get the others to start scoring aswell.

If we dont adress the goalscoring issue, we'll finish were we are now, 6th -7th...

I wonder what sort of budget we even have .....i don't expect us to spend any more than the club generates itself , I doubt FSG will put additional funds in but i can live with that. Anyway you could forgive Henry for wondering why he needs to buy another striker when they already spent £57m+ on two .

To be honest i'm really confused as to what condition the team is in and how much progress we are making . The style is obviously a thousand times better , we've a good defensive record , we've lost only 1 in 16 etc etc ....but at the same time we score fuck all , we've dropped points to some useless , useless teams and most importantly we lie 6th half way through the season . 6th . If the other teams fighting for 4th had got their act together we could be in a terrible position now .

I guess most people are trying to remain positive and believe we'll put these things right or have some more luck but i am a little less confident . I still can't get past the feeling we wasted large amounts of money on average players and it feels like a massive missed opportunity . It's wrecking my head . And i'm not just talking about the short term aim of 4th ...i am thinking about whether this team is good enough to develop in a title challenging one or not , to me it's still miles away from doing that .

Buying a goal-scorer will make a big difference, but we'll still need to invest later on in the attacking areas.

Fact is we've got a long list of players with no goal-scoring history, and it will take more than one signing before we start scoring enough goals to get back to where we should be.

Gerrard returning will probably improve matters, but it's difficult to confident about that.

A couple of Villa fans I know (there are a lot around here) tell me rumours are rife in Birmingham that we'll be in for Bent in January.

More or less - 28 next February. That would worry me less than the price though. Lerner appears to have said McLeish is going to have to sell to buy from here on, so they need money and would try and stiff us on the fee.

Yeah i've heard that one as well mate.

For ours and Kenny's sake i really hope they are simply rumours.

Not sure about that mate. I've seen Bent live a few times and I've never been the biggest fan of his all-round play, but he knows the way to goal, and at the moment the rest of our lads (with the exception of Maxi) don't seem to.

I can't imagine we'd get him for less than say £16-£17 mil, Personally i'd want someone both younger and better for that kind of cash.

I've never been a big fan of his mind, so it's a big no from me.

In an ideal world I'd agree with your first para, and certainly I'd favour such a purchase over buying Bent if we find the right player in January. One way or the other, though, we need to do something sharpish about the shortage of goals. The Blackburn game was a watershed AFAIC. If we *can* add goals to the football we've been playing we'll be right up there, so there's a lot riding on this IMO.

He would guarantee goals so I'm not against it, but Villa paid through the roof for him and I'm not sure that now is the time to be signing him.

What about the little mexican (torres look a like) can't he help us out or did we send him home :-\

If we'd had a bit more bollocks, at times, then we'd have another 6-12 points from what were shitty draws. We've give way too much respect to meh teams this year, we even made Blackburn look alright the other day.

A fit Gerrard, some shooting practice and playing like we are Liverpool should sort our probs.

Him, Kuyt, Suarez, Adam, they all need some. Some world class saves have been made against us this year for sure, but we've also shot straight at the keeper more times than I've ever known us to. Some of the spurned chances are embarrassing.

I was thinking about the same thing recently, I was thinking if we can win all our games over Xmas the great position we would be in going into the new year.

Obviously, things have not panned out exactly as all of us were hoping, but I dont think we should be too worried.

Agreed the figures dont look a lot better than last season, but having the best defence in the league is a massive bonus. The success of this club has always been reliant on a strong defensive line. Kenny has said it is a work in progress and it will take a while for our team to gel. To have turned what looked a shaky defence last season into the best defence so far this season deserves merit. I think a lot of this can be attributed to Steve Clarke also.

The fact we havent scored a lot doesnt worry me, at least we are making the chances. At least we look like scoring apart from not actually putting them away. I for one believe Kenny will be working hard on ensuring our players work harder with shooting practice.

One thing I do think is probably not right is the positions Andy Carroll seems to take when on the pitch. im surprised Kenny doesnt just tell him to stay on the shoulder of the opposing Centre Back to give knock ons for Suarez / Bellamy etc... Carroll seems to spend a lot of time chasing the ball in areas which arent suited to his natural game. Just get him up top use his physical presence and feed off him. Its like Heskey and Owen back in the day.... Or even Toshack & Keegan etc... Sometimes we need to do the dirty side of the game as well as be a top passing side. Use Carroll in that way please Kenny.

It would be nice to see some more Flair come in January, I'd love a goalscoring midfielder someone similar to a Modric / Silva.... I dont think many of those exist! Not sure who could fit the bill here who would be cheap ish? I would love to see Xerdan Shaqiri myself.

According to the Villa forums we're buying Bent and loaning them Carroll. Probably BS as every bit of ITK info out there.

Spending another 20M on Darren Bent will show that we've learnt nothing.

Indeed.

It would be a horrendous bit of business right now

Shame we didn't get bent years ago, but ho hum.

Any strikers in the russian league tearing shit up besides doumbia?
