1995 - We conceded 37, United conceded 28 (but Blackburn won the league anyway and they conceded 39)
1996 - We conceded 34 and United conceded 35
1997 - We conceded 37 and United conceded 44
1998 - We conceded 42 and United conceded 33 (Arsenal won the league that season).
Well, it's as you said. Wasn't much of a difference one season, but I guess they won it by scoring more goals than us.
Checked the results, a lot of 1-0, 2-1 losses.
And why do I have the image of Collymore and Fowler scoring goals for fun?
For 2 or 3 months Fowler and Collymore scored goals for fun, then Stan lost it. I remember going to the game and knowing that if Collymore had a good first ten minutes then he'd be great and if he didn't then we might as well sub him off there and then. So many players down the years who've had top-level ability but not the mentality / belief to capitalise on it, and that was him all over.

I mean, my memory was pretty much in line with yours to be honest, but perhaps it isn't so accurate. Fowler was amazing in those years but I think he'd often get 2, 3, even 4 goals in games, and also we may not have had a lot of other players weighing in with goals too.
Collymore has similar (but not as good as) attributes to R9. Could score any goal and make it look easy. He had pace and power. Like you say he didn’t have the mentality of the best.
This problem always dogged him.

So we are getting a 1/5 forward who doesn't track back, and we are paying him as though he is one of the best in the world.
There are a number of players who don't look even remotely threatening or sharp, at any point, and we started with two of them today in Isak and Salah. They aren't fucking on it. I've got no idea how to play this team into form, but I know two players who should be fighting their way back into this team from the bench.

He will go down as one of our greatest, but not this season.

The signs were there last season, and now he's worse. The better we are, the better he is. That's how he's always been. He will never lift a shit team. He's not that sort of player.
Hoping AFCON is moved up to November and Egypt has a long run.

He has these little fits of pique every now and again, but he should be benched regardless for the next couple of games at least. I know Slot is trying to play him into form but I don't think he's mentally right at the moment.
Or he’s playing like we should expect a 33 year old to be playing.
He won’t sign for anyone else while away with Egypt. Come next summer will he still be an attractive option for Saudi? We can see with our own eyes how he’s flailing. The data is backing that up too.
