According to the Echo, Skrtel is still feeling the effects of his jaw break and may be used 'sparingly' until the injury has healed. But will Kyrgiakos be able to understand our zonal marking system in such a short time? Will he get sent off? Will he be our new Sami, dominating in the air? I'm kind of excited but also nervous about this...

Don't know a lot about him. From what I've read he's strong and good in the air. That would be perfect for Bolton as they are unlikely to catch him for pace.

To be fair... Does anyone look like they understand our zonal marking system? We've already shipped 5 goals because of it.

Because the players didn't apply it properly, rather than because of the system itself, which served us well last season when we were flying.

uh-oh...
well he can't be worse than pellegrino...can he?
[/quote]

Well he can't be any slower. Unless he's a three toed sloth

How difficult can our zonal system be to pick up?

The following complicated instructions should just about cover it:

Stand on spot x and head the ball away if it's in your area.

He'll take zonal to a new level....

Thankyou. I thought it was only me that realised this.

"Zonal the greek" ha.

Has anyone ever seen him play? When I saw his pic, and read he'd played for Rangers, I kept thinking of Amoruso, or whatever his name was. Long hair, cult figure, prone to 5 mistakes a game.
Hopefully, this guy is better.

It's cost us goals for years from setpieces and open play, regardless of how well we defend generally. Most seasons we start sluggishly trying to 'apply' it.

I'm not denying it's a valid, effective system of defending, but pretending it doesn't have it's flaws is naive to fuck. United, last season aside, have exploited it's weaknesses against us time and time again from balls into the box.

We've conceded 5 goals because the players are struggling to implement it, so obviously it does have it's issues, otherwise we wouldn't see veteran defenders like Carragher getting done over because he's marking the space behind a player rather than getting infront of him, which is pretty much basic, schoolboy stuff.

Carra and Torres were both marking a zone where there was no one, while an opposition player stands there and gets a free header on goal.

If it's not such a big deal, why season upon season do I get nervous whenever a half decent side gets a freekick or a corner against us?

I didn't say it was flawless, but we proved last season that it's no more flawed than man-to-man, which players can and do also get wrong. I've shared those nerves you describe when dead ball kicks are awarded against us, but our "goals against" tallies each season suggest we've both been more worried than necessary.

Seen him play when he was at rangers!
was good for corners becoz of his height and strength but other than that he is a waste.
ok as a 4th choice i guess but i wouldve rather kelly get some game time instead

My mate is a massive Rangers fan and when asked described him as a solid, but always makes one or two mistakes during a game (he actually called him a "car bomb" at first). Then he summed it up by saying he was a bit like Troare

You would hope so, Blackburn had an average age of 17

Kyrgiakos is a fucking warrior.

Should start him against Bolton.

The Greeks only know one way to play - ultra defensive.

*Has mental image of him kicking someone in the chest and shouting 'THIS IS ANFIELD'*

He managed to jump UNDER the ball at one corner we conceded last night - it was quite an achievement, the corner came in from the right, he was standing in the left centre back position, and he ran towards the right hand post in a curving motion and leapt like a salmon as the ball soared past his left shoulder. I guess that's 'ring-rustiness'. He did win about three straightforward headers after that, and played some simple short passes along the back four, but whenever he tried to hit a longer ball he kept slicing it out of play. I'm not sure what Sammy lee got from watching him last night, apart from the fact that he isn't up to speed. Ayala and Kelly, on the other hand, looked disciplined, aware and fairly good on the ball.
