Cries of horror ring round the 6CM forum as someone dares to break rank - we don't have a 1st XI !

...................... Karius

Clyne ... Matip ... Gomez ... De Sciglio

(OK just being hopeful, or prescient, here - but it's odds-on a better LB than Moreno is inbound. If not then Gomez at LB and Lovren back in at CB ... unless Hummels/Subotic can be persuaded) !

Milner .... Can
However I expect to see a lot of the 20 yr old Grujic too considering the comments made in Klopp's appeal to the FA for his work permit (given) and there's still a lot of interest (confirmed offers made and refused) re. another inbound CM. If Hendo can not start to replicate his form of a couple of seasons ago - and his injuries seem to indicate that's an issue and will be the case - then he's going to be just a squad filler unable to compete with the new midfielders. Milner works perfectly in a Klopp system and is under-rated by many but could/will be replaced if, as I expect, we get a stronger CM in. Can is still very young and improving in leaps and bounds. Given his Germany Euro experiences under Low, and Klopp's direction and coaching, I'd expect further big improvement this season.

Mane .... Firmino .... Coutinho

............... Studge
Origi and Ings will get a lot of pitch-time too and I wouldn't be surprised to see Gotze make a move if he's still at BM come the last couple of weeks of the transfer season. If not him then another (potentially young) striker as the Benteke money will come in useful).

Karius
Any qualityLB
Matip
Lovren
Clyne

Can
Any quality DM

Coutinho
Mane
Any amazing RM

Any world class CF

Thats the kind of business we need to do if we want to compete i think.
Lallana, Firmino, Origi, Ings, Sturridge, Moreno, Sakho good players all. We need some worldies.

Mane plays on the right, so he can shift across

At this point any first 11 we can select doesn't quite fill anyone with confidence, does it? There are still too many question marks over positions we are still yet to improve (LB, CM) and the players who already came in are still an unknown quantity in terms of how they will fit in the team and the league. But most importantly Klopp's teams are usually better than the sum of their parts, but we won't see this effect until the season actually starts.

No matter how we slice and dice the "first 11" we don't have bigger names than most of our rivals – but neither did Dortmund, but they absolutely annihilated wealthier teams in Klopp's time there. Now we all know Lewandowski, Kagawa, Gotze, Gundogan, Sahin, Hummels etc – but they were all nobodies before they came to Dortmund (only Reus had some kind of national profile at Borussia Mönchengladbach and came for relatively big money). So it's really not about the names but about who can provide the energy and passion and not fuck up the decision-making – those are the players who will be in that first 11.

Not sure why, but I've got a suspicion Klopp might be planning a 4-3-3 sort of system

Think about it

Can
Grugic
Henderson
Milner
Dahoud / Zielinski / Neves / Whoever we buy

Only 2 of these can play in a 4-2-3-1. Now considering we have no European football, that's hardly any playing time for a couple of those players.

I won't be surprised if we see something like this:

Henderson/Milner Can/Grugic NEW

Mane/Lallana Coutinho/Firmino

Sturridge/Origi

Henderson or Milner, but not both together on the side; and no Lallana, unless he can reproduce some of his Euro performances. IMHO, Lallana's position is the one that should be strengthened once the defence has been sorted out.

Given that Mane plays on the right side, it looks like Lallana's position has already been strengthened

I like the idea of playing with 3 in CM with two pacey wingers.

I wouldn't mind signing Davies from Spurs for left back. He has dropped to the bench but reminds me a little like Finnan.

In a fantasy world.. .I'd go all out for Willian.. I think the guy is phenomenal.

Sell Benteke, Allen, Lucas and Skrtel and add 30mil. Offer Chelsea 70mil

Their wages combined around 200k per week? He gets to play with his Brazilian mates..

In reality.. Mane and Markovic

Ah Jerry, Jerry, Jerry ... This isn't a fantasy thread. I'd just love to see Kante in our midfield.

Wait.. Its not a fantasy thread, yet you have a LB with a low probability of joining as your starting first XI???

Talk about the pot calling the kettle.

Well done for missing out the line underneath that which clarified for all but you it seems.

My point stands froggy.
No it really doesn't. I had one player who I added as wishful thinking (and clarified it with the real options underneath) whereas Jerry had THREE players, two with barely tentative links and one just a total fantasy - with no clarification or actual Liverpool player option listed. If you think that bears comparison to the OP then I'm afraid you really are being obdurate.

Clyne---------Matip--------------Lovren-------Moreno
-------------------Can------Lucas-----------
-----------------------Coutinho--------------------
-------Milner----------------------Firmino-----------
-----------------------Mané--------------------------------

Manè played as a striker for Red Bull Salzburg and scored a lot of goals. That is probably his best position. I want to see Coutinho as our midfield playmaker. Milner is our best crosser. Playing Lucas would allow Can to play box to box. Milner isn't a central mid and never will be. Henderson as a backup to Can.

The starting XI may change if we make other signings like a replacement for Lucas/Moreno but right now he is our best option in that position.

Arn. I see you didn't pay any attention whatsoever to my painstakingly researched 'goals per minute' list of our strikers (and I included Mane). Mane came 3rd .. barely ahead of Benteke, so quite obviously playing CF is not his best position. And Lucas won't be here no matter how much you wish he were.

Mane won't be playing as the lone, central striker, he will be playing on the right.

Arn is totally fucking mental. This is not news.

I payed attention to your research. Mané played as a striker for Red Bull Salzburg so he can play as a lone striker without any problem. Scored 31 goals/63 games. He played on the wing for Southampton.

I want to see first game of the season as:

----------------Karius------------------
Clyne----Matip----Lovren---Gomez
-----------------Can--------------------
----------Hendo----Milner------------
Mane-----------------------Coutinho
---------------Sturridge----------------

At the moment I don't think Grujic will start over Milner, but great to have very good options to rotate from the bench in Lallana, Firmino, Ings and Origi.

For more attacking games i wouldnt be surprised to see Coutinho dropped deeper with one of the above in his place e.g. Ings as CF or Firmino.
