Mata to join Barca for five years - report

Valencia's Spanish international forward Juan Mata will sign for Barcelona for five years in a deal worth €20 million, Radio Marca reported.

The 22-year-old, who has a contract with Valencia until 2012, will follow in the footsteps of former Valencia striker David Villa who joined Barcelona last month for €40 million.

Barcelona's incoming president Sandro Rosell had promised to recruit Mata who is on coach Pep Guardiola wanted list and heavily endebted Valencia agreed to the operation because the club needs to raise cash, the radio station said.

Mata is currently with the Spain squad at the World Cup in South Africa.

His arrival at Barcelona will fuel speculation over the future of Barcelona's Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic who ended the season on the substitute's bench and reportedly wants to leave the Spanish champions.

Mata is quality but there's no way he'd choose us over Barca, even if we could afford him.

The way the papers go about praising Barca, I get the impression they pick up destitute kids from Somalia and train them and build Europe's finest team on 500 US Dollars.

The first team is largely made up of homegrown players, which is why they get all the praise (which admittedly does become a bit much) but they have spent loads in the past few years on building up the squad - often needlessly and poorly in my opinion.

For example, they've made a habit of needlessly buying expensive centre-backs who haven't done well or been given the chance to do well (see: 16M or so on Caceres and 25m on Chygrynskiy).

Yup. They have spent quite a bit on players in the 10 to 25 million category which seems to be disregarded by the press. They also have an extremely high wage spend, second highest I think. Also the press never mentions the fact that they are in debt to the tune of 400 m or so. I think one of their former directors warned them against splurging more this summer.
