If they were both playing during the same time frame - meaning had access to the fitness regiments, nutrition, etc... - then yes, I think they'd have a very decent chance.

There was hardly a weakness of that team. And what weakness there was wasn't a true 'weakness' - It was just an area where we weren't quite a strong as others...

It'd be one hell of a game.

that's a really touch one. I think it's a case of whose defense was better because no question both teams would severely test the other team's defense.

Few (if any) dare attack them. We would have, and we'd have made a job of it. It would have been tight, but we'd have taken it IMO.

I think Barca might have beaten that side.

I'd have loved to have seen the tippy tappy bellends try to get past Tommy Smith though.

I think Barcelona would win hands down.
Its the best club side ive ever seen.
The best teams ive seen are us 86-88 us 80-82, the mancs 97-99, the milan gullit, Van basten side and this Barcelona team.
And i just think this Barca team are the best.

Oncy: You're only saying that because you see them play every other week and the last time you saw our team was way back then!

Of course they would be able to beat the current Barca team. How many times they could do it out of 100 would be a better question.

Saachi's Milan would have beaten this Barca team, as IMO would Liverpool 1980. Maybe not the 87/88 version, because they were kind of the prototype Barca. But I do think a few serious hardmen PLUS a shitload of skill and brilliant finishing would beat those tippy-tappy bellends.

Let's not forget that the two great 'total voetball' Dutch sides LOST both their World Cup Finals.

another good question, as others have hinted, is whether the 88 side would've won the european cup over the ac milan european champions of 89 and 90. it's such a shame that 2 of the great club sides of all time never got to meet each other.

I voted no. I was only born in 87, though, so haven't seen loads of that Liverpool team, but I think this Barcelona team has to be the best team ever. I can't see how it can be improved upon.

I think Rafa's Liverpool could have beaten anyone over two legs.

Yes. They did it to Barca, Messi and all, among many others.

The Liverpool of the late 80's would have wiped the floor with anyone.

They weren't only good in attack but phenominal in defence. You couldn't get the ball off them.

The Dutch inspired Milan side were a brilliant team too!

Have any other club sides formed the basis of the national team (as Barca have) and then gone on to win the European Championships and the World Cup? Whilst being pretty imperious at club level as well?

Fair point as far as it goes, keni, but surely not conclusive of what would have happened between these two teams. It's not that long since we took them down under Rafa, and our '88 side was a much better one.

A top class team with defensive strength that plays well on the break can cause Barca trouble as Inter demonstrated last season. Barca never looked like scoring against them. They're brilliant but I think we'd do well, because we were brilliant.

No... and if anyone thinks they could, they are deluding themselves. The game is much quicker now, especially in the latter stages.

Not if you put the '88 side in a time machine and brought them forward to the present day, but these comparisons (if they're going to mean anything at all) are made on the basis of both teams having been around at the same time.

Yeah. If Anfield is redeveloped and we need alternative grounds for the duration, we could do worse than there and the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. 8)
