Worrying

Giving all these stories about Torres and Gerrard maybe having to leave or be sold, is it not worrying that not one of them has said that they are going to stay? I would have expected them to release a statement or whatever as soon as they could so they could concentrate on the World Cup. I'm worried. I hate the summer.

Well Torres has banged on on a monthly basis for years about how he won't leave, and Gerrard rarely bothers to say anything, so it's not that surprising.

If players released statements responding to every bit of press speculation they would spend the entire summer releasing statements.

also even if they do want to stay its down to the club as much as anything.

It's not just regular gossip though is it? It's intensified of late.

During the season they're quick enough to play down stories, because they need to keep focused. Once the season is finished this always seems the case. Players leave themselves open, for whatever reasons. Whether to force the hand of the club (re contracts, assurances etc) or to generate interest.

Either way, it'd be nice to just hear them say, "well for last time on this matter, I have no intention of going anywhere and I WILL be a Liverpool player next season".

Simples.

Players releasing statements is all bollox anyways.

How many times did Ronaldo come out saying he wouldn't leave - only to have secretly negotiated a deal months earlier?

Same goes for Owen - who was 'working hard' on his new LFC deal.

Fabregas - one week he's Arse for life, next he's sniffing around Barca again.

In football, nothing is guaranteed.

In fact, everything is made up shite.

I'd bet a sizeable sum that the both of them, Stevie especially, want to stick around and that they probably will. My guess would be that their relative silence on this issue is, as much as anything, an attempt to jack up the pressure on the club to do whatever it has to do to ensure decent investment in the squad over the summer.

How does it increase pressure on the club?

The fans already hate the owners and the media are already gleefully picking away at our carcass.

Unless I'm mistaken, we either get investment or there is very little money to spend, no matter how worried or angry fans get on the Internet.

It increases pressure on the club by virtue of the fact that we don't want to lose either of them. You may well be right that new investment will be needed in order for us to spend more on players, but I just wonder about that report a few days ago in "The Times" which said H and G would themselves be willing and able to put more in, but not for Rafa to spend. In any case I think the two issues (Rafa's position and the possibility of new investment) are almost certainly linked, with the first needing to be sorted before the second can be.

Then they shouldn't have given him a big long contract then. Idiots.

True. There's no logic whatsoever in this decision.

Not really.

I'm pretty sure they didnt forsee the on-pitch shambles that was going to happen when they gave him that contract; though aside from a few everyone else did have precisely this fear.

Now they find themselves in a position of not trusting the manger they themselves entrenched.

It's made the Mancs feel a lot better watching us sink tho; otherwise their loss of the title by 2 points would have hurt.

Apologies to St. George, but I'm merely stating the obvious.

But they gave him the contract after they held talks with Klinsmann for example. So I don't think they trusted him all along. But why give him such a contract extension then?

You're probably right about them not ever trusting him, to be honest.

My guess is that they realised that the Klinsmann saga was a big mess for them and thought they'd settle things down by offering Rafa a good contract after he did reasonably well last season.

Lucky us.
