Why are we letting in so many goals?

Everton's players said their game plan was to attack through the middle as they claimed that's where the defence was weakest. They might as well have added 'the right and left'.

Here's where I venture a little over to Macca's dark side....

I think we're a little bit naive at times and Rodgers should be doing more to sort it out.

The midfield isn't as good as we think it is or Rodgers would like it to be. I've lost count of the number of times our midfield have lost the ball and allowed the opposition to counter in numbers.

If you're going to push the entire team forward and try and try play some kind of tiki-taka football (emphasis on 'try') you simply cannot afford a) to lose the ball a lot and b) be very very average at winning it back.

We don't have the most amazing defence, sure, but any defence would struggle under the pressure ours is placed under at times.

We lack a genuine defensive midfield presence and until we get one (back) Rodgers should try and compensate for that as well as do something about our pressing game.

After throwing away a 2 goal lead.

So did Utd, and they've conceded 1 goal less than us. Do they have defensive issues aswell?

I agree with Keni though, good post. Hopefully the return of Lucas will give more balance to the midfield.
We'll at least have someone who is used to playing in that position.

Loads of reasons:

* Our defenders aren't that good. Well, they're not as good as the infamous back fours we had through the noughties.

* We haven't got a true DM. Even with Lucas there we afford the opposition acres of space infront of our back four.

* We're not as industrious in midfield as we once were. Under Ged and early Rafa we had a flat bank of four who were hardworking. Latter Rafa we had two strong holding players and the added protection of a fit and flying Gerrard. We now have more flair and less graft.

* We don't score enough goals, so we invite pressure and inevitably make mistakes. We also throw too many players forward and leave ourselves open trying to get that elusive break through.

* Attacking fullbacks. We lack players that, like Arbeloa, Riise and Finnan did, tuck inside to become the third centre back. Couple this with a system where the fullbacks are now wing backs playing on the half way line. Which inturn leaves the centre halves playing wider without a real DM dropping in. It's suicidal and Rodgers needs to bend it a bit to make use of what we have, rather than trying to achieve something we don't have the players to match.

* Our keeper is on the decline, and we've had a mismatch of systems and marking procedures implemented and then done away with due to changes in staff and management.

Yep, all this.

It troubles me that while the team (save for the odd mistake) looked very disciplined and co-ordinated when it played City - everyone seemed to know their role within the pattern of play - that looks to me as though it's actually deteriorated instead of strengthened since then. The long ball has crept back, the movement has slowed down and sometimes all but stopped and the defence, as has been said above, has looked sloppier and sloppier. Gradual progress towards a clear style of pay - great, anyone can be patient about that - but if anything I'm seeing the opposite. (I can see that sometimes the sheer tempo of a style can leave players struggling to maintain it - I think back to the performance Rafa's team had against Derby at Anfield, when three players were immediately tight in around an opposition player whenever he got the ball and the pace was ferocious - but even then, in later matches, you could still see where things were supposed to be going. It's the apparent erosion of the plan now that is a concern.)

I think that's been a pattern for a few years now. There is a bit of a buzz around the club when we've got a big game coming up, the players all up their games and we put in an encouraging performance... then it dies down, reality sets in that we're not actually competing with Utd et al any more and we struggle against the likes of Swansea.

Forget about talent, we don't have enough determination or grit in the side. Some of the players want success served to them on a plate. That's not going to happen.
