Whenever you bring up Rafa Benitez there is always an out pouring of praise for him by Liverpool supporters who will tell you at length what he has done for the city of Liverpool. Which I can understand that aspect of the love that most Liverpool supporters hold for him. But as a manager what did he really achieve...

Istanbul 2005 The Champions League Final. Who can forget that...? The high point of his managerial career at Liverpool. 05/06 The FA Cup final win... 06/07 Another Champions League Final, and nothing after that.

When pointed out that the more Rafa made the team on the pitch his team, the less we won, or even disputed as far as trophies when. Give credit where credit is due Rafa Benitez put together some amazing teams, albeit teams that under performed for some unknown reasons when it came to cups and titles. I would argue that had we had the Jurgen Klopp we had now in charge back then it would not have been a 30 year wait for the title

Some will of course jump to the defense of Rafa quoting net spend etc., but in truth you can apply

Jurgen Klopp In his first season as manager Benitez spent £26.8m on players selling £24.57m.
Jurgen Klopp first buy was in Jan’ 2016 spend a total of £5.35M. The summer window would see Klopp sell some £55.3m in players and bring in £61.9m in players

https://talksport.com/football/6597...have spent wisely and,£74m since October 2015.

Whereas I believe that Rafa Benítez would spend every window and felt that he neede to buy someone, Klopp does not think that way...

Rafa also I my opinion, too often bought quantity over quality

https://www.anfieldwatch.co.uk/rafa...field-cant-be-compared-to-jurgen-klopps-time/

This is not a Rafa bashing exercise but in fairness to the question I am about to ask these things had to be pointed out as I felt as a manager he was overated...

The questions...

Should it be a Five manager Banner? Klopp instead of Rafa or should it be a six-manager banner.

And given that Gerard Houllier won more trophies than Rafa, including a League Cup, FA Cup UEFA CUP treble should Houllier not be on this banner...?

“IF” it is five then Klopp should replace Rafa...

“IF” six or more by all means keep Rafa, but then why not have Houllier?

Tom Watson should be there - the club was built on what he started. Just put all our managers bar Woy and Brodge (sorry)

It's the managers who've won the league and European cup, that's why Benitez is on it.

Obviously not counting the old managers nobody gives a shit about.

I have the utmost respect for Rafa. What he did at Valencia was incredible and made him the ideal candidate to replace Ged. He was the right man at the right time but he was financially outgunned by several otuer teams. He delivered the top tier troph that restored pride and belief in the club.

Klopp is a level above him, when we won in Istanbul it was a miracle we could barely believe, but nobody thought we were the best team in Europe, let alone the world. Under Klopp weve become the best team in the world. They will have to bring a team from Mars to challenge us. Klopp has well and truly earned his place in the pantheon, but that shouldnt relegate anybody else. Greatness is not a zero sum game.

Klopp is sui generis. He's an LFC icon for getting the club and the city so incredibly, spookily, well, and winning what he's won, but unlike all the rest he's also surely someone whose sheer love of the sport in general, and his attitude to it and life as well, makes him so popular and respected beyond the club. If he was doing all of this for another club I really can't believe I wouldn't be delighted for him because there's just something so good and decent about him it transcends all of the bitter tribalism that is around these days and reminds you of what's really important, good and fun.

While I suspected it was more about league and European cup, I feel that Houllier done enough in lean times to earn his place on that banner

I'm not necessarily disputing your overall point, but this specific item is absolute bollocks. The holy grail is the league and Rafa came closest to winning that with the team he had moulded the most. He didn't win it, but your point that the team he shaped, as opposed to inherited, didn't even "dispute" (sic) trophies is pure guff

This. Rafa deserves to be on there just as klopp is. I'd argue klopp deserves a statue or something when he leaves

In fairnes I would point out that under Rafa we finished 4 points behind UTD on 86 points, But you Could say that Under BR we came closer losing only to City by 2 points on 84 points... So lets leave the second places out of it

Rafa won The CL 04/05, The FA Cup 05/06 The Super Cup 05/06 and The Charity Shield 06/07 peppered in that was a load of early exits in domestic cups. we faired a bit better in the Champions league games

Houllier won The UEFA CUP 00/01, The FA Cup 00/01, The League Cup (Twice) 00/01 & 02/03, UEFA SuperCup 01/02, and The Charity Shield 01/02 and got us into the Champions League the year we won it

Surely that should warrent him a place on the Banner, but I understand If it is about the CL and The Title, but I just don't think it is fair...

The Next Manager comes a long (Unlikely thou it is) wins the Europa League four times, The supper cup four times the WCC four times, four CS,FA and League Cup and never get on the banner..??

Think we need to look at things again

I have no fucking clue why I have to choose between them at all... I love both of em! I'm loving what Jurgen is doing with em today and I fucking loved what Rafa did with them as well... seems a silly thread...

Like I said - I wasn't necessarily disagreeing with your overall point (nor agreeing BTW), just disputing that specific sentence. You cant say we should discount Rafa because the team he moulded did not even compete for titles, then when I point out that they did follow up with "well lets ignore second places then"

I may have been wrong to make out you were a Trump supporter, but your logic & doublespeak does resemble the man

Klopp gets his own banner for sure.

He promised a title in 4 years and delivered.

We have had

Souness
Evans
Houllier
Benitez
Hodgson
Rodgers

all who promised but couldn’t get it done.

he even threw in a CL win, a WCC, a super cup, a hatful of great European runs and some of the best attacking ‘heavy metal’ football you are ever likely to see.

His only bleamish is a lack of domestic trophy success.

Didn't think Rafa promised us a title in a certain amount of time, I could only remembered Houllier's 5-year plan. Rodgers all about spins, nothing concrete and bigging himself up. Klopp didn't promise either, what he said he would do is to leave the club in a better place than the one before he came, and in the process he could foresee himself winning something, didn't say league title (title for Germans are equivalent to trophies in our lingo).

I think just add him into the list of Fab-4 to make them the Super-5! Why do we need to discard any of them?

Houllier and less so Rafa played some antifootball tactics sometimes. I remember during GH's reign how hard it was to watch Liverpool, however both won domestic and European titles, and their tenure should be viewed as a success.
