From some TaW article:
[article]The Reds have won just 64 per cent of games after going 1-0 up this season, compared with 89 per cent (2018/19) and 93 per cent (2019/20) in the last two campaigns. Also, that from 1-0 up, they have been pegged back to 1-1 more often than they have made it 2-0.[/article]

That's a worrying trend ... and I struggle to believe we can just 'turn it on' again next year (belief, resilience, good fortune etc)

Vvd is key as far as I'm concerned , if he can reach somewhere close to peak next season we will be fine , if not I think these struggles continue

Put VVD in and we stop conceding as often.

We're going to find out if this crew are indeed mentality monsters. Last season we were able to pull victory out of any circumstance because the players, to a man, believed.

This year we lost several key pieces for long durations. We look shattered.

Is that confidence, that mentality, something that can be recaptured or is the invincibility gone now and waiting for a full cycle rebuild?

Obviously hoping the former but I'm honestly not sure.

We conceded 12 goals in 7 matches after securing the title, with VVD in the team. Prior to his injury this season, we conceded 11 in our first 4 with VVD in the team.

In the 29 matches since his injury including that derby, we conceded 28, 9 of which came in 12 matches before the turn of the year (0.75 gpm), and 19 in the other 17 (1.1 gpm).

I'm not saying his return will not be welcome, but he was not performing at the level he was when he won best footballer around the time of his injury and whether he will be back to his absolute best remains to be seen. It would be a mistake to think that it would be business as usual once he's back - and if Klopp's system only works with a dominant VVD, then I hope there's a contingency in place, be that a tweaked system or new player.

The key and whats wrong was demonstrated in the last game, a complete collapse of form of our front men. Its that simple. The VVD issue and resulting consequences was yhose games we had neither Hendo or Fab in midfield, and these last minute goal conceding games with a slim lead dont happen if NatKabak are together. But main reason is the front men not putting away chances and being totally out of touch with each other.

So you don't think the absence of our three most important CBs (and Ali for a good spell too) might have influenced that figure? I will be well surprised that when those three return in the Summer we don't then go on to challenge for the title again next season.

No-one in the team has performed to the same level as the 3 previous seasons ... as has been mentioned everywhere from Sky (Carra & Neville) to LFC boards all over the country, and everyone is in agreement, it's almost impossible to maintain the standards we set, for 4 continuous years (look at City's fall off and now recovery), even more so with everything we've had to suffer since then (CV, VAR, Injuries etc. and yes Lady Luck too with timing of injuries, GK form etc.).

Honestly, I think a lot of our issues are down to not having VVD even the goalscoring issue. I think when we have VVD the opposition set themselves out differently and attack differently. They set themselves and their attacks in such a way that they try to avoid going near or playing any ball near VVD. Because of this other teams became far more predictable which makes it easy for our pressing tactics to succeed. Also, VVD presence meant that the attackers can concentrate on attacking.
Now without the presence of VVD opposition teams are outright attacking us without caution which in turn means that our attackers are doing way more defending and pressing all over the pitch. So by the time our attackers have to strike the ball I think they are more 'leggy' and shot are being missed because quite simply they're more knackered than they've ever been. Despite their lack of goals Mane and Firmino and Salah do a crap ton of pressing it takes its toll sometimes on that ability to be accurate every shot.

TLDR
It might sound crazy but get VVD back and our attackers are doing way less defending and hopefully, their accuracy should hopefully increase.

I was pointing out how ludicrous it is to blame our abysmal form after 1 Jan on his absence or pin our hopes for next season on one man alone. But I am otherwise in agreement with you that a drop off was almost inevitable (although I had hoped it would be less drastic).

I swear we do these sort of threads every bloody week now.

It’s as if you all are still stuck in summer of 2020. We had just won 19th and you are waiting to proper celebrate. But it’s been almost a year now. And you’re still wearing a mask.

Are you all suffering from some form of PTSD or what ?

Get over it. It’s been a shit season. Let’s move on. Football is dead anyways.

You've taken the most pessimistic stance of anybody on this whole board all season long, mate... This is simply the season from hell. There's never been one like it in the entire existence of LFC.

If, knowing this team as well as I know that you do, you truly cannot see how the best defender on the planet returning to anchor us next will won't improve us beyond this shadow we've become this season, it's time to stop watching until August, and just detox from it all for a while.

You know he's the lynchpin for all that we do. You know he's the key to every single aspect of how we play. And you know we're a vastly different proposition with him than without him. If we have a fit squad on day one next season, and VVD is himself again, we're no worse than neck-and-neck with Qatar for the title again.

Nah, the season was actually going ok post VvD injury b/c JoeGo & Matip are pretty good CBs, are fast and allowed us to continue the high line. We were 1st without him ... so it's not VvD, it's everything in one go.
That being said, I'm pretty confident we'll challenge or win the league but that depends on variables now that have to be question - can the squad's key players stay healthy and can the squad be given enough new parts, to replace departing/old parts, to ensure it can compete during a long (and probably - again - COVID influenced) season?
Time will tell.

Lets also not forget the role a crowd can play. The elation from going 1-0 up, the atmosphere always improves and the encouragement to get a second. I wouldn't be surprised to see most teams having similar stats of failing to turn 1-0s into 2-0s.

Just not sticking the ball in the fucking net. We’ve rarely been outplayed. Not scoring has killed us off this season. Look at the last 3 games. A billion chances and 2 points/euro exit to show for it.
Yup. Considering all the issues we've had, we've still been the better team for the majority of most matches.

A little more luck could have made the season look a lot different.
