Where did it go wrong this season?

At the start of the season I asked the question after we brought the number of players we did, "could we be the next spurs?" I do think we bought way too many players, and some way over market value. No one could have thought Loveran and Balotelli would've been this bad, no one. I think we should look in to the free agent market and see who would come to us, because money is tight. We need a good DM, 3 more strikers before we spunk 20 odd million on another defender. We need a defensive coach if BR is to stay. if we are getting Milner and Ings on out of contract surely we should push the boat out and try to get Adriano and Sami Khadira by offering lucrative contracts.

We seemingly didn't have a plan for Suarez getting off, other than naively hoping Sturridge stayed fit. We perhaps signed too much potential. We overpaid massively on what we did sign. We bought a couple of players based on one good season. We bought midtable players and wondered why we went from 2nd to absolute bilge.

It's a simple equation.

Our failure to replace Suarez + Risking the fitness of Sturridge + Not playing a regular DM + Not having a stable defensive unit = Our poor season.

as Gene would say, EAT MY EQUATION.

Pre season, not adequately replacing Suarez. With an adequate replacement we'd have easily got another 9pts+, finished top 4, and everybody would be creaming themselves over the messiah rodgers.

Aside from the obvious loss of Suarez - who's proceeds we pissed up the wall, there seems to be a lack of planning to our buying.

It seems to me that we're not buying players with a particular system in mind, and we're not crafting that system and learning it week in week out. Rodgers changes our staple system 4-5 times a season. Not small changes like 4-4-2 to 4-4-1-1 either, but huge fundamental changes - back 4 to back 3 for example. No wonder the players look lost. They've never had a real chance to build rhythm, gel, get to know their roles. Even yesterday, after 4 weeks of 4-3-3, our genius decides to go 3-4-2-1.

Then think of the individual players. Can's been given brief glimpses of midfield, then he's gone to RCB, then RB, then back to RCB. Lovren's gone from looking ok in a back 4 to a shambles in a back 3. Sterling's played wing back, attacking midfield, right wing and forward - sometimes all in the same game. Markovic played a lot as a second striker in past clubs - but the poor lad's had to learn the ropes at wing back. One week Ibe's in the front 3, then he's a wing back. We've gone from slower more physical players up front to Sterling - then back again - then back again. A major shift in approach. No wonder the players can't find form and look lost.

How do you ever build momentum, confidence or swagger this way?

This is where we've really missed a Director of Football. For god's sakes, this summer lets work out what system gets the best out of our best players, and stick to it, and recruit specifically for it.

Wenger sticks pretty religiously to 4-2-3-1. So has Mourinho this season, so has Southhampton. Point is not about 4-2-3-1, but in general, the teams who do well are the one's who've finely crafted their systems and every player knows their role as a cog in the wheel.

We did not adequately replace Suarez.
We found at the start of the season that Gerrard had lost even more of his form and game and was offering no protection to defense. We desparateley needed a dedicated DM, and when we switched to 3 at the back when Gerrard was injured, we found ourselves capable of getting resulta again.
Towards the end of the season we had to accomodate Gerrard again due to sentimental reasons.

At the start of the season I posted a thread saying that Rodgera had a few questions to answer. For me the biggest issue was indecisiveness on how to use Gerrard effectively. But given what has happened since I think Rodgers couldnt have done much. He couldnt afford to be ruthless without affecting player morale probably. This is probably the toughest decision he has had to make since taking over the club.

Im well prepared to give him a clean slate, due to all above. But a clean slate means he can no longer point to how we finished second as a proof of his managerial ability. Next season Brodgers has everything to prove and he can have no qualms if he gets the sack next season due to us struggling to be relevant again. I do hope it doesnt come to that.

Oh and his inability to spot a defender. In no way was Lovren ever better than Agger.

Suarez out Balotelli in and Agger out Lovren in means we weakened our starting eleven significantly and any gain made on other players/positions was not going to show itself that easily.

Agger has been overlooked hasn't he?

It's simply a lack of quality.

None of lallana, balo, Lazar or can are world class or even top 4 class and its fine to say they will grow to that level in time but ultimately we needed that quality immediately.

Coutinho and sterling are both good like and can be great but we need more.

Excellent post. The only thing I'd add is that, if we could get Ancelotti now, I'd go for it.

Like the Italian accent ("resulta", "Rodgera") BTW. 😉

Selling Suarez
Losing Sturridge to injury.
Club Captain quitting mid-season.
Not picking up points against opponents we're supposed to be better than.

Regression to the mean happened. Lot of things falling in our side last season ( healthy Sturridge, Suarez having a worldy, unusually high number of setpiece goals, Skrtl scoring career high number of goals, Man Untd transitioning from Ferguson, Chelsea having a transition season under Mourinho) and credit to Brendan and the team for almost taking advantage of it. Randomness was in our favor last season.

Randomness was not on our side this season. Without Suarez and Sturridge, Rodgers tactics failed.

Also our transfers - We have been horrendous in our transfers for like 6-7 summers in a row. We cannot be this bad consistently for so long and not expect to pay a price.
